IPL - Manual or Automatic?

Considering a used IPL, but can't decide on the manual or the automatic. I have driven both in the 370Z and honestly like both of them. I'm just starting to learn about the IPL as an alternative to other cars I'm considering (335i Couple, Audi A5, 370Z, Corvette), but I have not driven a G37 in years.

Does the manual IPL have the syncro rev match that the 370Z has? Does the automatic it shift as quick as the 370Z 7AT does when using the paddles? The 370Z paddle shifting is honestly quite impressive. If it's the same shifting as that, I'd be pretty happy with the Automatic.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I've had an auto G37 (2008) and now a 6MT G37S (2013) 6MT is much more fun to have but doesn't have synchro rev match like 370Z.

What he said. It feels so rewarding when you do a prefect shift. I too came from an Auto G

no offense, but if you have to ask that question then you should probably go with the 7AT.

if you are a manual gearbox guy then you wouldn't need to think twice, it would be manual all the way. the G37 6MT gearbox will not win any awards for smoothness or feel, but it is not that bad and can be tweaked if needed to improve take-up (RJM, Jsolo spring mod).

Hopefully the next Q60 coupe gets the 6MT with synchro rev match. That would be sweet! Not sure what to expect from upcoming Infiniti's with their new coupe about to release January 13th. Let's see!

Really? The shifting in the G37 is not what I would call quick.
If I could find a manual I'd be driving it. Unfortunately the cars in my area when I needed one were all auto's. The 7AT isn't that bad at all, but you have to learn to drive it where your always in the higher powerband. I only use the paddle on my car but you have to learn how to use them.

I would not own this car in an automatic.

It's a sports coupe, so a manual transmission is a must.

I would have bought another SUV or truck if I wanted a vehicle with an auto transmission.

And no, it doesn't have the rev matching like the 370Z. Still a very fun car to drive.

Just wish it had a bit more torque.

But with this car, you trade luxury and comfort, for raw performance.

But if I wanted that, I would have bought a 370Z or a Mustang Cobra.

Overall very happy with my baby.

Frankly I think you also need to take into account where and how often you are going to drive it. When we bought out G we considered a MT but my wife's daily commute was 45-60 minutes in a lot of stop and go traffic. That sealed the deal for a AT.

Seconding this. It's much more comfortable to be in traffic in an auto. Think about how you use the car and what your driving is like, if you have other cars in the garage etc. That said, I wouldn't trade my 6MT for an auto, ever.

I came from an auto G like some of the others here. I don't need the synchro rev-match. I don't see the point, one of the most enjoyable things about downshifting for me is getting the car to downshift smoothly and quickly with just the right about of gas to give a rev match. The pedals are extremely comfortable to heel-toe if that's your thing. The take up on the clutch is a little high and the friction point is a little thin compared to other cars. It won't be the smoothest or quietest transmission, but when you figure it out, you can shift it much quicker than the auto.

I'll be honest with you, unless you're driving competitively shift times don't matter. I take my time, I bought a MT to enjoy the feeling of driving. Also the gearbox is really excellent, I love how the ratios are spaced and it has the nicest, most direct feeling gear change this side of an M car or anything similar in price range.

I would suggest that if you like manual transmissions then go for it now, because from what I read, in a few years they will no longer be offered in any new car. With the advent of improved AT’s and the further development of electric vehicles, perhaps it’s a matter of time.

Idk if you're looking for the red interior or not but I believe you can only get that interior in automatic with black exterior. Anybody know for sure?

+1

I don't think I've seen anybody post that they wish they had got the 7AT over the 6MT

Offense taken. Here's the deal, I've had over 20 sports cars in my life. Nearly all of them manuals, I'd put my manual driving skills up against just about anyone's. I asked if the IPL has synchro rev match, and the other question I asked was the paddle shifting on the IPL as good as it is in the 370Z, which is very good. If so, then I would be able to accept getting the 7AT, if not then I will have to find a manual transmission car, which are harder to find in the IPL. If the paddles shift like my wife's Mercedes paddles then they're useless. And if anyone thinks a car needs a manual transmission to be a sports car or entertaining to drive, they should go drive any new Ferrari or high end Porsche.

If you don't have the knowledge base to intelligently address the question that was asked, then simply move on. Stop trying to build yourself up (oh I'm a manual guy, I'm a hard a$$ because I can shift a car, and everyone else is a *****) by making demeaning remarks toward others.

So you built YOURSELF up in the first couple lines and then made demeaning remarks towards others...interesting tactic

Agreed...you definitely over reacted. All the other guy was stating is that anyone who loves to drive a manual car, no matter the situation, will choose a manual over auto no matter what.
