Just Noticed RUST on the roof

Hey guys,

Love the G. I have a 2008 G37S and just noticed 2 small spots of rust on the roof between the windshield and the sunroof (looks like from stone chips).

I'm looking to see what options I have to fix and prevent it.

I'm from Toronto and searched the forums for body shop recommendations. Someone recommended Avenue Collision in Toronto. They quoted me $1245 (taxes in). They will rope off the windshields, remove antenna (take off headline inside), treat rust, rust inhibitor, paint, and finish. They're not available to take the car until the end of June.

Does the price seem right?

Thanks,
Raj

I would never spend $1,245 on two little spots of rust like that, especially on the roof. I would get a rust remover that is safe on paint and get as much off as you can. It should come off easy since that is surface rust from the bare metal where the paint chipped, it isn't perforated. It may help to use the corner of a sanding block. After that, use touch-up paint. Were talking a less than $20 DIY and you can keep your OEM paint.

With the ride that shop was going to take you on I would have guessed they would be available to do the work yesterday.

To me - that sounds like a pretty normal price for the amount of labor involved. Go get more estimates. Can never hurt.

As far as treating it yourself, it can be done, however it will never look perfect (unless you're some sort of body guy that we don't know about). You need to make sure to get rid of the rust. The stuff spreads like cancer. Living in Canada, I can only imagine it spreading fast!

Do research, get opinions, and more estimates.

Over $1200 sounds a little expensive. I feel like having an entire panel repainted costs less than that, even replacing the panel sounds like less. I would shop around, find out from local g club where a good body shop is.

I agree it sounds high, but when you think of the work they are going to do, it starts to make sense. They are talking about removing headliner (labor intensive) and actually treating the rust properly. That is a long process. But I do agree, shop around!

Honestly, do it yourself first. If you're not happy, you can always have it done by a bodyshop later.

So I needed to get my windshield replaced along with some other service.

Ended up dropping the car off at the dealer and they scratched it on the front driver side fender. Also ended up doing a pretty sloppy job with the windshield with the sealant noticeably visible along the top.

I complained to the dealer and they're having it fixed along with the rust on the roof.

Yea, Downtown Infiniti.

Got the car back this morning. Repaired the roof with a nice blend job.... but the windshield job is not 100% (maybe cause I look in the cracks and can see the sloppiness).

Looking back at it... I should have just repaired the crack and kept the old windshield. From my research, it looks like its possible to repair som pretty big cracks these days.

i would assume a windshield fix can be done cheaply as a DIY right? i had some small cracks and got a mobile glass repair company to come out and fix that for 50$
