Ticking noise when idling & car is turned off

I have a 2010 g37S coupe 6MT.

When I'm idling (at a stop light or D&D's drive thru) & when I turn the car off I hear this ticking noise or...I don't know how to explain it (only last a few minutes when I turn the car off). It's a metallic sound & it has no set rhythm. Or the heat shield could be loose, but my techs looked at it & said no.

My techs & the Infiniti dealer said it was the stainless steel exhaust expanding & retracting, my techs said the maxima does it too. I've had it for a year & it never did this before, but mostly drove during warm weather & now I'm driving it here & there when it's cold out...got too impatient to wait for the summer. Should I worry about this? Did I do something to have it happen? I do drive the car aggressively? Can I fix it? Does it happen to anyone else? Will an aftermarket exhaust change this?

Sorry for all the Q's & if this is common knowledge, new to the g's & modding.

I do have 5,000 miles left on my power train warranty, but Infiniti said there's prob nothing they can do, they think it's the exhaust as mentioned before

Hot metal contracting as it cools. Normal.

But it does it everytime I drive & when I'm just idling. I know what you're saying, I just want it to go away, will it stop in warmer weather?

& thank you for taking the time on a question that apparently not only did I already know the answer too, but seems like common knowledge

RE: Ticking noise when idling & car is turned off

Hello. I'm new to MyG37. I've not posted many items, but I too have been experiencing this 'tick' when the engine is running and sitting in drive thru or in traffic with the windows down.
I did some poking around underneath my 08 G37S Coupe and noticed some weird wires sticking out of the heat shields in random spots. All of these wires are from manufacturer and all of them on the passenger side were soldered into the heat shield. However, on the driver side there was one small set of wires which was loose and just dangling from the heat shield.
I grabbed my needle-nose pliers and yanked those loose wires out of there as they serve no purpose.
To my surprise the raddle/ticking sound at idle is GONE!

I agree, after you turn the engine off all of the metal in the exhaust is contracting as it cools and there is nothing you can do stop that. But at least I'm not a coffee can with a loose bolt rattling around when the car is running!
Hope that helps.

I've read of others putting additional hose clamps around their heat shields and that helped lessen the noise.

Thanks!

I'll have my techs check it out on Monday and see what they find, hopefully they find some wires (I think) and I can stop this noise. When I hear it, it makes this beautiful feel like I'm driving a POS...until I roll up the windows and hit the highway at least

Thank you

If you took off the heat shield around your stock y-pipe, the ticking will disappear. The ticking is coming from that heat shield. Anyone with an aftermarket y-pipe will notice that the ticking is nolonger there after replacing.

Could this also cause a metallic rattling coming from the exhaust around 3-5k rpm? I have both issues at the moment. I will be swapping out the whole exhaust eventually but if I can just rip that shield out to make the noise go away i will.

Yup..because our car runs hot. Just on the G is more obvious but all cars should have it.

Are you sure they serve(d) no purpose?

Aren't you even a little curious what they were for..?

No, as I get going, like immediately start driving, I don't hear it and it seems to be coming from more of the front of the car
