What's your favorite DIY Disaster (aka lessons learned)??
Lol, I once dropped a fender washer into my engine bay as I was buttoning everything back up. I thought about leaving it behind, but I decided to grab a flashlight and look for it. I found it sitting on the INSIDE of the serpentine belt. I'm not sure what would have happened if I had decided to try starting the car with it sitting there, but it probably would not have been good.
Lesson learned: rust sucks from NY State, leave it to the pro's.
This happened on my 05 Altima SE-R, but I was going to replace the OE y-pipe on the car with an aftermarket one and figured not a biggy to get this thing off. I PB blasted the two flanges (3 bolts each) that go to the upstream cats and proceeded to break free all of the bolts until I got to the last one which was very stubborn. At the time I didn't have any torch so I tried different sockets to get the last bolt out. Long story short, I rounded that baby clean off and had to take it to a local shop after I was defeated. They had a hell of a time and had to cut it out with a torch and do a little repair on the flange.
I did walk away with a new set of bolt extractors and a very nice sounding exhaust after the fiasco. Everytime I see a really rusty bolt, I cringe now.
