I've got the slapsticks, but I do prefer manual. I have a lot of fun driving my car but I find myself almost 98% of the time shifting through gears. The auto is only when I have older people in the car, as it helps me drive quieter..lol. I have been thinking about trading in and getting a 6mt..

Given the personal nature of this decision, best advice is to find a dealer that will let you take both for a test drive for a day. Likely a used one, but enough to give you a good idea. Used is probably better than new even - will show you how well the cars age.

I recently bought a 7at at my wife's request (a strong request lol). I have never owned an at before other than SUV and pickup. Most recent car was an Audi a4 6 speed manual. We split driving SUV and the g so had to consider her wishes or I never would have considered an auto. I've put about 800 miles on it and its OK to drive so far. Interestingly the wife said recently "I see what you mean about missing the manual. So I guess it's such a personal preference you'll have to make your own decision. I did used to dislike the manual on heavy traffic /stop aand go but usually preferred it. I think I'm OK with the auto though. Tough call. The only manual g I've driven is a friends g35 and I thought it was kind of hard to drive - I thought my a4 manual was easier to drive / more refined and smoother shifting and more nimble but they are quite different cars - can't say I clearly liked one more than the other. How's that for an opinion that's all over the map! I guess that reflects the pros and cons.

Im older now, and when I was a kid it was fun to drive stick shift cars. Race around and what ever.

However, EVERY time I was in stop and go traffic for more than a few minutes, the stick shift really got annoying.

Like you said, if I had 2 or 3 vehicles, then I would surely get a manual G37. But for something that I'm going to be driving around the city everyday, I think the auto is my best bet.

I mean, the 6 speed stick G37 has the coolness factor, but the older I get the less important that is.
Same boat indeed. I guess I want the efficiency, ease of use and smoothness/refinement of the automatic but with the fun factor of the 6MT but I have to pick one over the over. I was leaning towards the 7AT but maybe now leaning more to 6MT now. I may just end up getting which ever one I get the nicer deal on?

The opinions in this thread haven't completely swayed me in one direction, I guess its a pretty personal decision.

The fact that you noted that the "coolness" factor of the 6MT is decreasing as you get older indicates that you may find it more annoying in traffic than cool to have a 6MT. It depends on how much traffic is enough to annoy you in a 6MT. At any rate, if you are saying that you are getting older, how likely is it that the people you spend time with are immature enough to say something like "Nice car. Should have gotten it in stick so that you look cooler!"? Sounds like something a 16-year old who just learned how to drive manual in their 1985 Honda Civic would say.

By the way, I am sure that the 0-60 tests done in the car are by people who test cars for a living. The 0-60 times they pull off in the 6MT are going to be far better than what the average manual driver will be able to pull off. When you look at it that way, chances are that the 7AT will be faster than most people you meet on the road with the same car in 6MT. For all I know, the majority of manual drivers shift the G37 in such a way as to make it have 6+ second 0-60 times. Fast, but not as fast as the car can go.

I've had both a 7AT and a 6MT. Currently driving the 6MT. From my experience, the fully manual mode on the 7AT doesn't feel anywhere as engaging as the true manual. The Drive Sport mode was nice but in the end I'd choose 6MT over 7AT any day. But then again, I carry the same bias as you that sports cars should be driven manual.

6mt is more entertaining only when getting on it, but to be honest one of the worst 6mt to drive out there, had to modified it from the gate to feel decent. I would go auto if I had to do it again, which i wont. Nothing about this car was ever truly fun without modding for me. Owned 20+ manual cars. Go auto!

Thank you for your input. I've been hearing also, that the manual transmission set-up on the g37 isn't that smooth. I know most people change the spring (forget the correct term) to help improve the clutch feel. And the gear box isn't really smooth shifting.

Just curious though, what about the G37 don't you like? Why wasn't this a fun vehicle to own/drive unless you were modding it?

Also, what other vehicles in the same price range/class do you think would be better? Any Toyota/Lexus?

From what I've read here, the MT often has slave cylinder issues and it's an unusually complicated (read: expensive) fix.

I love the G37 the way it is. I got the S so it has the big wheels & brakes and improved suspension; no mods needed (I have other things to do with my weekends).

I'm on my 3rd G Coupe. If I thought any other car in its class was better I would have gotten that instead.

Really, you need to decide what you want the car for. I see the G as a GT, more of a sporty cruiser than a real burner.

If you want a sports car check out a 370Z or better yet, a Lotus...

I like the 7AT just fine (2013 G37x coupe / no paddle shifters) and I think it's smooth and does a nice job overall. Every once in a while it'll hunt at crawling speeds if you play with the manual mode too much and lurch a little. It's plenty fast and has instant throttle response. I believe they worked out the kinks with the programming at this point. That being said, It's not the transmission that makes the G37 boring...it's the overweight bloat and body roll and overall lack of personality. The acceleration only makes it fun for so long. (I still miss my WRX)
I can kick out the back-end and get some nice oversteer going once in a while with the traction control off, but otherwise, meh...

Have you drivin a 6MT? I test drove them in the G and the Z many times over and just hated the trannys. Like I always tell people, my 1974 B210 have a far better MT than they are putting in cars these days. This is coming from a guy that used to be a very hard core MT guy. Heck still am in some respects depending on the car. I wanted so much to like the Nissan MT as I really wanted my Z to be a Nismo..............as most know I did not buy a Nismo due to the tranny

20+ cars the G was the worst drive of them all. Beautiful exterior when done RIGHT. Anyhow I hated the shift point, the stiff clutch and clunk of it, drove 3 at dealer so this IS how the 6mt drives. Just not a smooth car at all, a Honda with 200,000miles has a smoother clutch. Honestly I had to mod it to make it comfortable, and actually quick. People might go bat **** on me, but honest the G is a weak car in both the sport/luxury car that it is. Lexus F all the way, BMW m series both worlds better IMO!

What we need is an automatic manual with 3 pedals - CBW - clutch by wire
