New G37S 6MT - strange noise (video)

Hello everyone,

I have been reading these boards for a little while before I pulled the trigger on this car. The information I came across was incredibly helpful!

About a week ago I purchased a 2013 G37S 6MT. So far I have put about 650 miles on the car. I have been following all the break-in recommendations (keep it under 4k, very the rpm, under 65 mph, no hard breaking, etc...)

A day or two after I purchased the vehicle, I started to hear a strange noise from the car. Basically, it occurs only when the clutch is engaged and I can hear it when I am not giving any gas - or when I am using the engine as a brake to slow down when coming up to a stop. Sometimes it will occur right after I engage the clutch after an up/downshift. Sometimes, I'll just cruise on 2/3/4 gear take off the gas and I'll hear it. It appears to happen mostly on 2/3/4 gears around 2.5-3.5 rpm. The length of the noise varies every time.

I recorded the video below to try and illustrate what I am talking about. The noise appears to be coming from underneath the car near the middle or towards the passenger side. I plan to take it to the dealer and have it looked at; however, I'd like to be able to get an idea of what the problem may be before taking it there.

The noise is most audible during the following times in the video:

1:26-1:32
1:42-1:54

It almost sounds like grinding two stones against each other.

You have to put the volume up there to be able to hear the noise clearly and get an idea of what is going on with the powertrain when it occurs.

Thanks in advance for any insight you guys might have about this issue.

p.s. Apart from this noise issue, I absolutely love the car! I will post some pictures a little later.

Honestly it just sounds like typical manual transmission noise. The transmission in these cars is in no means quiet, the throw out bearing is loud and the flywheel isn't quiet either. Personally I wouldn't worry about it unless it is so loud that it's annoying to you.

Had the same problem on my 09'

Took it to the dealer twice the first month I owned it and they said it was normal. Like Tyler said, these cars are not quiet at all. Years later I installed a loud exhaust and never heard it again

I hear nothing out of the ordinary.

Repeating the video several times, with the volume maxed out, I hear a very faint whine. Some cars exhibit this to varying degrees. Mine is louder, especially when really hot. Some are completely quiet. Ymmv.

Don't lose sleep over it.

I didn't follow any particular break in schedule. Didn't beat on it, but didn't gramma shift either. Most important thing is not to stay in any particular rpm range for extended amount of times. Also used engine braking often during the first 1K miles.. Changed oil at ~1500 miles.

I just installed a new southbend clutch, lightweight flywheel and aftermarket slave cyl and throw out bearing, the noise is stil there on mine if not a tad louder when idling I can engage and disengage the clutch and hear the pressure plate spin down, noisy transmission just the nature of the car, never cause issue for me, a little annoying yes but nothing that can be tuned out with some music even w windows down.

Thanks for all the feedback.

Yeah, I can't hear the noise even through the engine/exhaust sound. The last couple of days I haven't been able to hear it at all. Everything seems to be normal. Got about 800 miles on the car now. Will do an oil and filter change at about 12-1300 and go from there. I am assuming the dealership will use adequate oil or do I need to specify anything to them?

Here are a few shots of the car.

I have a hard time hearing anything too but I also took my car in to the dealer and was told the noises I hear are normal. I've been used to the refinement of my S2000 transmission so this took a bit getting used to but all in all is strong and should serve you well for many many many years.
