Exclamation 5 speed auto not staying in DS mode- HELP!

08 G37 5 speed auto, 59k miles

Just had transmission fluid replaced and now half the time when I do a manual downshift or up-shift, the car will automatically go into "D" mode instead of "DS" mode....

What is up! HELP

Why shift manually (DS mode is pretty aggresive in it's shifting)? If you leave it in DS mode (auto not manual) does it stay in DS mode?

I rarely shift manually.
That is not the point.
The point is that
1) my warranty is about to expire
2) it never did this before the dealer changed the AT fluid a week ago

Anyone else have this problem?
If I *want* to manually shift down a gear once every 2 months, I do expect it to work.

Simple answer here .... take it back to the dealer

There have been some sporadic issues reported with the shifter mechanism on 5AT. Might be related.

Yes take it back. Thats your best bet

As an FYI I shift mine manually a lot. Not as much as the Z but I still do often. It should be an option no matter what some say.

If you have it in DS mode and manually shift the car, AND the car does not stay in DS mode and reverts back to D, then a switch/solenoid in the trans is bad and needs replacement.

DS / manual mode won't work.. - G35Driver

Better get it fixed under warranty, some said the dealer wanted $600+ to fix it.

And if the car was fine before the fluid change then the more reason to demand to have it fixed. And I shift manually all the time. I think I have used DS mode maybe 5 times in the year and a half I have owned this car. I find it quite annoying and useless.

Thanks guys,
I really *like* to know what the problem is before I get to the dealer... because in 800 miles he is going to start pushing back against these things.

I also *really like* getting to know the car better. I think knowing what caused the problem will help us all.

Thank you san~man!

According to the dealer this was:
Replaced Shifter Assembly
Repair Transmission H0001
Device Assembly - Transmis - 34901-JK60C

According to the internet, the price of the part is $386 list (or $294 sale)

According to the service advisor, it was the shifter assembly inside of the car under the middle console and not a part in the transmission.

Searching that part number in this forum, I get an old post where this happened to others:

Cheers

This really had nothing to do with the OP's issue...
Why not get the feature fixed instead?

most people use manual shifting to have a little fun with the paddles and to control the gears as they please.

Guys I have the same issue right now. The car is now more than 4 years old (comprehensive warranty is done) with about (less than) 20K miles. Took it to the dealer, the service guys wiggled the shifter and then couldn't reproduce the issue. So the problem does seem to be the solenoid inside the shifter. It started happening again after couple of weeks though.

Called the dealership today and apparently it is not covered under the 6 year transmission warranty and they will probably charge me a diagnosis fee. There is no way I am going to pay out of pocket for this especially if it is going to cost close to $600 to fix.

What do you guys recommend? Do you think if I call the head office and complain, I may get somewhere?

I dunno, you may have something on them if you brought it in under warranty and they said there wasn't an issue. If they won't goodwill repair it then you are probably on your own.

Yeah I agree with someone else who said take it back to the dealer and reiterate that you came in when it was under warranty and they didnt fix. Ask for it to be done in good faith. At the most they will say no. They may ask you to get a service done in exchange, which is fair.

$600 isn't really that much considering the car involved. Your 60,000 service will be around that much as well.
