There must be something wrong with me because I do manage to have fun with my 5AT. Sure I'm missing that third pedal but the paddle shifters and auto rev-matching almost makes up for it.

Agreed. I can't buy ANY sporty car with an automatic. A clutch pedal is a must for me.

I don't mind driving an automatic in an SUV or a luxury car, but other than that I'm not interested in automatics at all.

The biggest thing for me was that I felt that the transmission wasnt doing justice for that big 3.7L V6 powering the car. I believe with this motor and its high redline its better for the driver to have complete control over everything. Yes, I know there is a tiptronic mode, I used it, and the shift delay was a bit much for me.

I don't know why but I hate that tiptronic word. a slushbox is a slushbox, tiptronic was a word that was invented to fool people that a shiftable automatic is the same as a manual but without a clutch.

The shift delay gets under my skim too, you just have to time it well or you'll bounce off the rev limiter. I shift at 7000 and the trans actually shifts at 7500. If I wait to 7500 to shift I'll bounce off the rev limiter. Sometimes I wish I got the manual but most of the time I appreciate the comfort of the automatic.

LOL, I get that alot actually. I have no problem admitting that my Gearbox does feel like a pile of slush at times, but it does feel better than the 08 5AT

With how ****ty the 6mt performs on the G, you're way better off getting an auto, especially if this is going to be your only car. And get an 09. Not just for the 7 speed, but because a lot of kinks were ironed out in the 09+ models.

I see a lot of people complaining about the 6MT in the G37, but mine worked just fine. The only complaint I had was the high engagement point of the clutch. Other than that, it was great.

It all depends on preferences, in the long-run, because some will prefer an AT over an MT, but others will prefer vise-versa. I have a 5AT and love it, although I do believe that a 7AT would fit the car better -- better yet, a 6AT would be perfect if they had one. When you're driving on the freeway in a 5-speed, you do feel like it needs just another gear. You will also get better gas mileage with a 7-speed, guaranteed. I've driven three 7-speeds that got 4-7 miles more per gallon than my car does. But, I do say, if you're preferring an auto-tranny, don't let it stop you -- you won't regret it.

The 6MT was not done as well as it could have been for this car IMO. The NVH in the 6MT is just too much for this type of vehicle- especially after getting our of something like an S2K (which has the best gearbox I have experienced) or a BWM with a manual. The "direct feel" fits well for the Z but not for the G. The AT just feels more refined.

With that said, I think the 7AT is1 too many gears. They should have made it a 6 speed so that the driver doesn't have to hunt for gears as much.

the 08 was a better car. the 09 they started taking things out... unless you're going to get the g37x coupe, i'd get the 08.

if you're considering because the automatic, the 5 speed was a better gear box.
