Extended Warranty

When I went in for an oil change today, the dealer service guy talked to me about extended warranty. My car has 88000km (~54700miles) on it, and warranty ends at 100000km. For $2800, the extended warranty would go all the way to 160000km or two more years (which ever comes first). I'll probably keep my car for two or three more years. Do you think this is worth it? Should I go for it?

I never was big on extended warranties until my new plasma TV failed two months after the manufacturer’s warranty ran out and it cost me $845 to fix it. So I then changed my mind on them and have one for my G37. Of course I have had no problems with my G but it’s nice to know I won’t get burned for at least seven years. After that it may be time for a new G.

I love free extended warranties, that's why I buy most electronics with my AMEX or another major CC.

Check what the warrany covers before jumping in. Chances are it is powertrain only and if you have not had any powertrain issues to date, you may not in the next two years either. Also, I find extended warranties to be very implicit in what they will cover and you could find yourself in a losing battle down the road.

Consider your cars history, your wallet, your driving habbits/style and most of all, your peace of mind. Weigh them all and then make your decision.

I personally do not think it is worth it.

$2800.00 could be saved for something else. In the next 2 years the battery or alternator might go out or the radiator crack, but all those are less than $2800.00.

Hell even bearings for wheels and other components don't cost that much with labor included.

I'm not sure what would cost that much to fix unless the engine/tranny failed.
