'08 G37s Coupe - "Fail Safe" problem - help!!!
Super frustrated!!!
I captured the limping episode on video 3 weeks ago and took the video to the dealer. They looked at it and said they would get back to me at the end of the day - it's been 3 weeks and I didn't hear back.
I almost got into a serious accident this morning, making a left turn with a car coming at me at 50mph+, the f****** car didn't accelerate and started to "limp" in the middle of my left turn while this van was racing right at me! Luckily i got out of the way, drove and tested and sure enough the car wouldn't accelerate above 4k rpm.
My car is not safe!

same problem too still waiting.
I have the same problem currently its at nissan/infiniti dealership. this is the 5th or 6th time for this failsafe problem. same issues 4000 rpm limp mode then goes to 2000 rpm limp mode and engine light comes on.
1st time serviced was charging the battery
2nd replace battery with a larger one i think.
3rd replaced some sensor for window saying it was drawing power causing a low voltage error
4th/5th mechanical (part of some sort not sure on name) replaced for the cam shaft pulley??? took 3.5 wks waiting for part.
and now after that they tell me its most likely the other side that needs to get done as well.
problems started with limp mode in march/april 2010 and been in the shop off and on until now. i have a 2008 g37s. the dealer agreed to look into getting me out of this car and asked what i would like to go into since i have 18mos left on my 4 yr lease. i dont know if they can match or beat my lease payment for a new either 2010g37xs sedan or not sure to get a coupe which i loved since i have a 2nd kid coming in april.
i told serv manager that i dont trust this car and want something i feel i can take a road trip with my coupe 08.
my car has been in shop for roughly 2.5-3mos since march of this year. good thing they are nice about courtesy cars first was the ex then now g37x sedan which is fun but not as fun as my coupe.
oh ya 20500 miles on it or 33000km for us canaucks.
how do i know if problem is for sure gone???? sux

Hmmm....strange. My old M3 used to limit the revs when the engine was cold....as it warmed up the rev limiter would eventually allow it to rev to the redline. I'm not sure if the G has a similar feature, but I don't think so. Was your engine at full operating temps when this happened?

jrock - that sucks, sorry to hear that, i can just imagine your frustration having to go back and forth with the dealer and all of your time it took up. sounds like you'll finally be done with it and have a new car? hope it works out for you. I loved my coupe before all this started happening, it's a really nice car and I think it would be hard to switch over to something different, hopefully these are isolated issues, although i have heard seen a number of people complain about a similar problem on through this forum...
MSCA - it's not a weather/temperature issue because I've been having these problems in fair weather conditions. Yesterday, it was about mid-60s and it happened after I had already driven for an hour, so the engine was warmed up. I understand what you mean about driving more carefully, and I believe me I have been because I no longer trust the car. But sometimes it doesn't matter how carefully I drive, since others may be doing stupid things are driving unsafe, and in some cases, you have to take aggressive action to avoid an accident. This is a serious defect and it's unreasonable just to live with it.
UPDATE: my incident yesterday happened just before I got to work (0.5 miles away). I got to work, parked, put in my full day. After leaving in the evening, I started driving and tested the car. It was driving normal, reaching 5k+ rpm with no problems. I got on the freeway - everything normal - shortly after I got off the freeway, the engine light came on and the care would not go above 2.5k rpm. I guess this is "limp mode". I drove in limp mode for another 14 miles all the way back home.
My buddy is a mechanic and he came over with his computer, the car has 4 error codes:
1) P0021 - "Camshaft Position - timing over-advanced or system performance (bank 2)"
2) P0524 - "Engine oil pressure too low"
3) P0021pd - same description as #1
4) P0524pd - same description as #2
We checked the engine oil and it was at a full level and clean (the dealer changed the oil just a few weeks back). I dropped the car off at the dealer today, we'll see what happens....
