Am I crazy not getting AWD.
Am I crazy not getting AWD.
I have my heart set on a new G37 Journey coupe with the following packages:
Premium Package
Navigation Package
Sport Package
I went to my local dealer yesterday, told him what I was looking for and he told me I was crazy to get RWD as opposed to AWD (I live in the Midwest). He said RWD would be virtually useless in any meaningful amount of snow. The problem is, I think the car looks a little boring without the sport package. Now, I don't fully believe him (it can't be THAT bad), but how is the RWD coupe in the snow?
The reason I'm leaning towards RWD is so i can get the sport package. I am not in the least a performance enthusiast, but I think the sport package makes the car look much better, I like the sport seats and paddle shifters.
Is it worth passing on the sport package to get AWD? How will the car perform when there is a few inches of snow on the ground?
Also, if I get AWD I may be interested in the optional 18-inch 9-spoke aluminium alloy wheels listed on Infiniti's car configurator. Does anyone have pictures of these wheels as the deal had no idea what they looked like.
Thanks!

I have the coupe S fully loaded and LOVE it...but I will say I drove home to Colorado during Christmas and I couldn't even make it up my dad's driveway in 1/4" of snow...the RWD in snow is like trying to sprint on an ice rink
but then again...the S is soooooo much fun

yea if you drive with the stock summer tires in snow, your car will be not making up any amount of snow. most of us who have to deal with winter with the sport package put on snow tires. I put blizzaks on for winter and they get me where I need to go.
the problem is ground clearance so a few inches of snow and any car will get stuck. this is a sports car so equip it as such, leave the awd for the sedans!

Just buy a decent set of winter tires/wheels,and you'll be fine. The dealer is right that you'd be crazy to drive with the summer tires in the snow, so don't.
Plenty of RWD vehicles do just fine in the snow. If you're in deep enough snow to get stuck with winter tires, you could probably get stuck with AWD as well.

and someone helping pushing this car he finally drove out
I could get this ugly spoiler and any wheels/tires I like on my G37x, however no metter how much you will pay, you will never convert rear wheeel drive to awd
+1 on the tires... i think you should be fine with a decent set of winter snow tires. I would still go with the Sports package.... but if you really want to go with AWD, then you can get the "sport package" front bumper and install the paddle shifters yourself later...

It would be nice to offer Sport Package for the X coupe like they do on the X sedans. Although it lacks staggered wheels and LSD, I would think the AWD system makes up for the loss of LSD.
But again, if you're buying this car as a daily and WILL BE driving in the snow, it'd be better to have AWD than RWD with snow tires... although I've heard from many members that RWD with snow tires aren't as bad choice as they seem.

+1 on Infiniti offering the Sport Package for the X Coupe
AWD should be on all vehicles, its just better traction for every possible condition. I was contemplating getting AWD vs Sport and was prepared to add paddle shifters, sport wheels and a sport front bumper after purchase. You don't need a LSD if you have AWD, but I was gonna miss the BBK and sport seats (too expensive to convert, IMO). If I was in Chicago I'd definately have gotten the AWD because I planned to drive this car twelve months a year. Good snow tires on a RWD are a great compromise if you have a G37S, but are no substitute for four wheel traction. I love my sport package, but what swayed me away from getting a G37x was the lack of aftermarket suspension options like springs and coilovers, although I believe Eibach now has a version for the AWD models. I've driven in Chicago winters and would love the freedom and control that the G37x affords.

Well here's a thought (may be crazy, I don't know), could I ask the dealer to swap out the performance tires for all seasons (without buying a brand new set of course) when I take delivery of the car? Has anyone ever done this?
