1 Year Later - A Review of the G37s Coupe 7AT

I've had my G37s coupe 7AT for a year now. I think its lines are refined and definitely inspiring. I get many kudos from friends and neighbors for its looks... so for those of you with one of these in your garage, rest assured it's a nice looking car and definitely one to be proud of. I chose the 7AT in this car because it's a DD and I'm in traffic in So Cal frequently. I know this will cause some to "flinch", but I never really considered the G37 a "sports car" (heresy, I understand... but gotta be honest.)

Previous to this I owned a 550HP C6 Corvette (modded, of course... heads, cam, intake, headers, exhaust, etc...) Actually, I "over-modded" it... some of you will shake your head in agreement... the familiar, "been there , done that".

Back to topic... the car has been trouble-free... but.... and this will get some stink-eye.... lackluster. When I try to push it, I'm left disappointed and wanting. Even my wife notices the body roll and says, "It doesn't corner like your vette." The acceleration, or lack thereof, has left me wanting and frustrated. When I slammed the go pedal in the vette it slammed my head back and spun the wheels till about 40 or so... actually I've gotten loose at 100 mph before... but far from it in the G37. Comparatively speaking, the G37 is very sedate.

At first, I thought it was fine. I mean, I was over my juvenile HP phase (as my wife called it!) and I needed a more refined "sports car". But... it didn't take long before I really missed the awesome torque and HP of a big block. There's a famous old saying that goes, "There's no replacement for displacement!" I've got to say I REALLY miss the big block days of head snapping performance... 0-60 well under 4 seconds type performance. Many of you might look statistically at 0-60 times and say there's not a significant enough difference between say 0-60 in 3.7 secs. and 0-6- in 5.0 secs. TRUST ME, if you been in a sub-4 sec car and and over-5 sec car, the difference feels like an eternity... at least as far as that visceral thrill goes. Heck, there are many on this forum spending many $thousands to gain just a few tenths in performance... so they all know the difference in the numbers as far as seat of the pants feel.

The G37s is a great all-around daily driver. It's fun, fairly quick, corners well and looks great. If those are your criteria for a daily driver (they were previously for me!) then the Infiniti G37 is an awesome choice. Unfortunately, if you're one of the very few percentile for which performance is your measuring stick... then I think you "might" be left disappointed by this terrific all-around sport-coupe. For those performance freaks (like me) I think it's a better option to choose a purpose built (high performance) rocket and justify its existence somehow to your better half. Dollar for dollar, in the performance category, it's hard to beat a corvette Z06 and its numbers.

Best wishes to all and enjoy your G37's knowing most of the population would give their left nut to own one!

I can see what you mean. the 37 is the fastest car i have ever driven, so i don't have any other benchmarks to go by. When i step into my sisters 2007 civic, the thing is dog slow.

Now you went from a heavily modded vette to a G37, so thats also a huge difference. For you, i think your best option would be to keep a fast toy (such as a vette) in the garage for the weekend desire for speed, and then a vehicle like the G37 or similiar as a daily car. That way the wife will be happy, and your commutes will be comfortable.

also, i wouldnt mind if you posted up some pics of the previous beast!

I'm still working on "STAYING MARRIED" and having my toy! It's sad I'm so "p-whipped"... but I said to self, "Hey self... do you want to get laid regularly and be a father to your beautiful children or do you want to have a Mach 5 dragster? Self said make sure sure I laid regularly!

I'd love to post pics to my previous beast... (tail between legs)... I'm gunna have to ask the wife for the secret code... geez, fly a $100 million aircraft but have no clue how to post pics... pretty sad, huh?

The way I see it, there's always a substitute to getting laid on a regular basis.

But there's no substitute for going "WHOOOOOOOA" in the car.

I was expecting to read a review of the G37. This was more of a retrospective concluding that you bought the wrong car.

I like the idea of twin turbos. That should solve your problem.

Actually I think it's more fun to drive a slow car fast then a fast car slow. Sucks when your in a super fast car and you know if you ever actually use it you'll be in jail. After I took my Viper to the track, I rarely drove it on the street. Just too slow and boring, on the street.

TOTALLY AGREE!!!!

when i read this is was like DOMO......

Its a rediculous comparison, of course the G will not be anything close to a modded vette! Its like dumping the G for a cobalt and expecting something of it.

BOOST OR BUST BRAH

Arrow To bring this threda back on topic..

Hello. I went out today to test drive a g37 as I wanted to test out the paddle system. There is no Sport option with the AWD coupe, so I tested a sedan. Downshifts were great but upshifts are as slow as my 2006 M35. What I did like was DS. I would keep my car in DS ALL the time.
Motor seems a lot noisier, due to the higher revs and this might get tiresome but I really enjoyed it today.

And the convertible looks awesome in black!

More testing next week.

Back on topic??? The op was talking about the G compared to his vette and what he thinks about it after a year. Not test driving and paddle shifters.
