On an interesting note as well you CAN lock the doors with the key in the car if there is someone in the passenger seat (awake or not LOL, too long to explain).
Since we are on this type of subject, I didn't know until recently that the car retains power to raise the windows and close the sunroof for about 45 seconds after the engine is shut off if you haven't opened any of the doors. Open either door and all bets are off.
I just found out about this accidentally yesterday when i was closing my windows and pushed the ignition off at the same time.
