Sunroof SHATTERED

Last night, my husband and I were on our way to the Alicia Keys concert at the Staples Center driving on the 110 North. All of a sudden we heard this huge BOOM sound coming from the G. I was like WTF was that... it sounded like a gun shot. My husband (who was driving) exited at the next exit and got out of the car to check what it was. To his disbelief, the sunroof window was shattered. There was no trace of the foreign object anywhere. The exterior of the car was in one piece- no scratches or anything. What could have cause this? I have only had the car for a month. I will post pictures when I get home tonight but can any one explain what could have happened and could give me an estimate quote on what it would cost to fix the window?? PLEASE. Thanks!

Sorry to hear that happened.

I know where you are coming from when you talk about a loud booming sound.

Something similar happened to me while I was on the freeway. I was driving my truck and all of a sudden something flew straight onto my windshield, which shattered the top half of the windshield. I even got pulled over by highway patrol because they saw me swerve. They thought I was drinking and driving, but soon saw that I was covered in shattered glass, and half of my windshield was missing. What had hit my windshield was a large metal piece from the light post that was loose.

If you haven't called your insurance carrier yet email me. There are certain ways of describing your problem to the claims adjuster that might help you out in what you'll pay.

Wow! That's nuts... It might've been something that was flung up off the Freeway... Maybe piece of tire rubber from a semi-truck blow-out? I dunno... Call your dealership and tell them your situation, maybe they can replace it for free... Sorry to hear this...

After asking a claims adjuster, they have had claims filed and paid out for pressure differences causing the window to blow out. It's considered a Comp Loss.

I haven't heard anyone saying this, but it's really nice of you to offer your experience and expertise in the insurance industry for the forum people.

So, thanks Graham.

"Pressure cause my window to explode outwards."
Pretty simple and too the point. It's happened before.

the right air pressure in cabin and relative to outside could prob do it...especially since ive heard many peopel complain of sunroof popping noises - the structural rigidity of the car itself is in question i'd say. its not even necessary something hit the car especially since there are no scratces on the car's body itself...bizarre as it sounds maybe ur sunroof did just...explode....
