Well if we take off from the light, the only thing they will hear is our exhaust purr as we pull away from them. If we let them get a head start then we can make sure they hear us ROAR when we fly by them at 6500rpm

In my defense they did the same thing when I had an 08 altima or my s2000 and I'm in my mid 30's . The older ladies in the neighborhood used to "stand around and talk" when I would be out working on one of my cars... Sigh, I really gotta get back to the gym, those where the days. And ya, I live in an upscale neighborhood. The looks have slowed down a lot since I blew out my shoulder and don't exercise.
