service question

I've read through the "chirping noise" and "clunking noise" threads more than once now. But if anyone feel like this is just a repost then I apologize....

I dropped off the G for the dealer (not the one I purchased from because this one is closer) to fix the chirp noise and check out the clunking noise when disengaging the clutch to stop. I didn't get a very good vibe from my service guy. He claimed that he has never heard of the chirp noise problem but when I asked him to stand outside of the car while I go from N to 1st he finally agrees that there's some kind of clicking noise. He then tells me that all the G37s have that. When I asked him about the clunking, he gave me the same response like there's nothing wrong and nothing to be done.

Nevertheless, he kept the car and gave me a loaner. He said he's not sure if there's anything to be fixed. So I'm thinking that he's going to give me a call tomorrow telling me that they couldn't do anything because it's not really a problem or there's nothing to be fixed......etc. What options do I have then? Go back to the dealer I purchased from?

Side note: when I was leaving, an older guy came in with a 2007 G35 sedan. I was getting my stuff out of the G when I heard a huge crash/crack. The guy drove his passenger side headlights/bumper into a corner and just completely destroyed the right side. People went over to make sure he's ok but I bet he probably felt like shet. I know I would.......sucks

If they give you a hard time print out the threads here and bring them to your service advisor. Both of those problmes are known now so just because he wants to play dumb does not mean that you shouldnt get your issues resolved. Be persistant.

Thanks. If I remember correctly you had the problem fixed and they told you it was the axle clicking issue right? Do you also have the clunk/chatter when you disengage the clutch to come to a stop? I've read that it's common but I'm wondering if it's normal and I just have to live with it?

I have the clunking noise when I disengage the clutch from 1st (mostly) or 2nd gear to come to a stop going slow speeds (think 5~10 mph). This used to happen a lot when I am driving in the parking lot of a busy mall due to the short distance between the stop signs. I also took it to the dealership and they said nothing was wrong. So yesterday I decided to reset the ECU for the heck of it. So far I have not heard that noise again (will observe for a couple more days). Therefore, I am thinking maybe it is due to us being new to manual transmission and kept stalling the car while the ECU is collecting its first couple of data points but unable to do so - hence ending up with bad data and messing with the clutch engage/disengage timing. It might be psychological, but the clutch felt more smooth after I reset the ECU. It wouldn't hurt to try it!

Hm interesting. Thanks for the info. It's definitely good to know that the dealer told you there's nothing wrong with it because the clunking made me feel like something mechanical's loose. I've even heard a dealer telling someone on the forum that the noise is normal because lighter material was used to cut weight on the G and that was causing the clunking.

Either way, hopefully it'll go away after I reset ECU. I have 900miles now, not sure if I should do it just to get rid of the noise or wait till break-in is done.

If the transmission learns your habits and causes a clunking sound b/c when you first got the car you weren't a great shifter, I'd be a bit worried what that ECU is thinking. I'm getting my car in soon and I've been driving a manual for about 5 years. I've not ever stalled a G37, but I found the clutch action is so short it'll take me a few days to get used to the clutch so that I smoothly shift 100% of the time. Maybe it is a good idea then to reset the ECU's after the first couple weeks or 1 month of driving. I'd be interested to hear if that fixes your problem.

Just got the car back. No more chirping and I think the clunking is really minimal now, even though they didn't do anything to address that. I don't know if it's psychological but the shifts feel smoother now.

"tech verified noise, isolated noise to the L/R axle, removed an axle and lubed splines, verified noise reduced after repairs"

Nothing was done for the clunking, they documented and said because it's so new there's no fix for it.

Feel like a million bucks again

Ecu???

I am really considering resetting my ECU after reading how u felt the clutch to be a lil smoother after because i was on ur same boat. i was a relatively new manual driver and stalled 5-10 times in the first 500 miles and also i had my rear axle click/chirp lubed and re-torqued....

2 Questions...

1. What reset method did you use? Can u link me to the thread showing ur method because I know theres a voodoo method with pumping pedals and $hit lol and a disconnect battery method and so on...

2. Does resetting the ECU change anything noticeable meaning do i lose my radio presets, all the lil options i tweaked in my navigation, my phonebook for bluetooth calls, etc.? or is it simply an internal CPU reset not affecting amenities related settings??

PS
congrats u got it fixed that was BS when they plays stupid cause virtually all of us had the rear axle chirp that needed lubing...

If you follow the instructions given in the tutorial from the link above, you will not lose any of your customized presets. It's a simple core data dump.

can bad tries have adverse effect on the ECU's memory? I dont wanna corrupt anything form the looks of it - these cats are not having an easy time doing the "easy" ECU.....I will give it a shot & let u know. Ill even use a stop watch to keep with those time windows...

I reset mine yesterday using the procedure posted above. It took me 5-6 times to get the timing correct. The only thing I think that needs changed in the procedure is that the check engine light I believe is actually named "service engine soon" After resetting I believe that my car actually runs better. I was really easy on the throttle during the break in period. I believe that the AT learned to quickly upshift as soon as possible. All is better now.

For the 5x where you had to floor it in 5 seconds, did you floor it pretty fast or slowly?

I just spent the past 30 minutes trying and no luck, hahaha, god damn i feel like im doing some voodoo ritual on my car, you guys sure this works? lol

I tried with a stopwatch , and in order to floor it 5x in 5 secs, you gotta do it pretty fast, i would think...but the question I had was....when you began flooring it 5x...how did u count the "within 3 secs of it being on" portion? Was it after it stopped beeping or was it right when all the lights turned on?
