Considering a Vert - Few Questions
Considering a Vert - Few Questions
So I test drove an IPL last year and was impressed with the car, but once the car's roof went up, it felt like a rattle-trap. Is this typical for these cars? It was a total show-stopper b/c of the noise the roof was exhibiting on slightly rough roads. Are all convertibles this noisy? Is this something that can be fixed?
How hard is it to find a wind deflector? These things are worth every penny and cuts down the wind noise and buffeting tremendously.
Is it a concern to be driving around without a spare tire?
Thx for the help.

I can not speak to the G 'Vert rattling specifically, but all 'Verts for the most part will have some rattling from the hard top or, in the case of rag tops, fluttering from the wind. Older Audi's and Saab's were notorious for that cacophony. The most common source of the rattle is the headliner roof latches not securing tight. A friend has a newer BMW 4-something and that hardtop is as quiet and smooth as butter (wish he'd sell me the damn thing already). I am tagging @kiseliok here as he has a 'Vert that I believe he daily drives plus he is familiar with the crappy roads in this state.
A wind deflector can make or break the cabin noise. They come up once in a while on eBay or here on the forum, plus there are aftermarket alternatives. On my Coupe, when I swapped to the newer style sunroof wind deflector (the flap that pops up when you open the sunroof) it cut down on the wind noise tremendously to the point that I did not have to crank the AV up to hear. My vote, if you get a 'Vert, get the deflector.
As for the spare tire- that depends solely on you. I am very old school. I will not drive a car without a spare tire (which rules out most new cars for me). I refuse to fiddle with those damn "tire repair kits" or stand by the side of the road looking like a emasculated moron waiting for AAA. Again, I am old. There is the OEM spare tire kit that was offered for the 'Vert (see this post).

Thx @ILM-NC G37S - you're always a wealth of knowledge. I too am 'old school' (just turned 6-oh). When I test drove the IPL vert, it rattled like crazy. Just drove a Journey base vert and it had 68K miles and was beat up, but it rattled much less than the IPL. I've had verts before but the IPL was too much for me to want to buy it.
So hopefully I'll have an update this weekend on a vert I'm considering. Just not too sure what to do with my immaculate 2011 G37 Coupe Journey with brand 'new' paddle shifters installed. Hard to justify a G37 and a Q60 vert but also hard to part with the G37 that I know inside and out.

That is the exact same conundrum I have. Do I want practically 2 of the same or...(?)... Above all, I know I will never part with my Coupe. Period. What I add to the stable is debatable, but the G stays.
Driving Without a Spare
I had some doubts when I bought my 2010 Vert new. 90,000 miles and 13 years later, even though I've taken on many nails from roads, I've never had to use the aerosol glue can. Having the extra space in the trunk has been helpful. I do carry a tire inflator that connects via the cigarette lighter--never needed it for an emergency.
so what I do for this is bump music with them pillarless windows cracked and that should fix that. All jokes aside every time I wash my car I make sure to crack the roof halfway and use chemical guys "leather conditioner" and that helps a lot
