Anyone replace their Convertible headline tethers?

Trying to find some information on how to replace the headline tethers. It looks somewhat complicated and I cannot find any good YouTube videos explaining the process. Any help is appreciated!

I haven't heard of anyone doing that and one of mine broke off last summer so I'd really like to figure something out as well.
From what I could tell, the plastic clip (in my case) is sewed into the headlines and I'd have to replace the whole thing unless I can find someone with a heavy duty sewing machine and mad skillz.

I'm working on it now. Those plastic clips are not seen in, they clip into a metal track on the side. I had to remove the center panel due to clear coat delam and got to looking at these lines. I think the hardest part is going to be finding the right type of line.

Hi guys,
@kiseliok - I see what you mean by the broken clip. Not sure what @n559br is referring to - but looking at this, I wonder if you could make / fabricate your own clip and fasten it to the existing plastic via some small screws or rivets potentially? You could even put a small backer piece of plastic behind the current piece to avoid touching the material headliner when screwing it in? I have a lot of tools and materials, so looking at you situation, that is what I would try if I could configure something that would work and be safe. Hopefully that makes sense? conceptually.

My situation is different from @kiseliok, in that that cord you are almost holding has worn out and is completely snapped. I have actually contemplated using some braided fishing line to connect the two pieces using some fancy knots. I may try that given I have nothing to lose.

The two "wires" are 150 each - yikes, and looking at the mechanism I would have no idea where to start?

Last, my son works for BMW and has a friend that works on convertibles. I am trying to see if my son and his friend could do this... If it works out, I will record and video and put it on YouTube and add the link here. Will also post it if braid the pieces together.

I'm sorry you don't know what I was talking about. But here are photos of the plastic clips that hold the top tethers. Along with the metal piece they fit into.

Thanks for the info, gents! I'll have to mess around with the wire end as the current situation is not ideal and the side flap (end of the headliner) does not stay put as it should.
Here is another pic of the 'wire' wearing through. Might be in a similar spot, @Jamesptc .

I started this repair today. I have a similar situation to you in that the rear flap doesn't look right. I have one tether line that is not connected to anything so I started looking at the head liner. I see in one of the plastic inserts there looks to be a place for a line to go but the plastic is cracked. This leads me to believe this is the line that pulls the back corners tight. I think I will just drill a hole in the plastic and run the tether through it. Also, as far as the tether material goes, I think a length of 80-100lb test monofilament fishing line would work fine as a replacement. It's about the correct diameter and is limp enough to make the bends.

Looking forward to hearing / seeing how it works out. I just ordered replacement tethers, so I will be working on the full tether re-install in the next week or so. I did talk to an Infiniti mechanic, and he said he starts from the back of the car and works forward - one tether at a time. I have the headliner removal and installation part of the manual too - PM me if you need it.

Interesting I went from the front to the rear and had decent success. I wouldn't mind a copy of the headliner manual.

Thanks. I pulled it down and will review how I'm going to do it. I wonder if I can get an interior shop to see up a new headliner.

Hi James, can you please PM me the link for the headliner installation instructions? My 2013 G37 had one of the cords break right at the very back of the roof, and the replacement cost of $4100 is of course out of the question. I'm hoping to replace that single tether, but not sure where the cords run through the top and connect.

Thanks!

@Jamesptc Unless the link/ source has proprietary information, might you be able to post the link for the headliner removal for all 'vert folks to be able to access?

It would not only help all' vert owners, but it would also save them from repeatedly asking for the info. I understand if you are not able/ willing.

Just a suggestion...
