I just bought a 2011 G37 Vert and found a broken tether in the trunk. I need to replace my tethers as shown in this thread as the other is frayed. I saw the part numbers you posted. At the discount Infiniti website it lists these parts as a wire. I am just double checking. Are 97198jj52e and 97198jj5ae the tethers?

One other question. Is the Left the passenger or driver side?

I appreciate the help.

gwho

@gwho There are a number of parts in the headliner assembly that appear to carry the beginning of the part number you have listed. Based on your description, the part you need is not a metal wire, but rather more like parachute cord. You can see a more complete set of all the parts here: OPEN ROOF PARTS. 2009 Infiniti G37 | INFINITI Parts & Accessories Online, Bend OR (infinitiusa.com)

Bhobbster62,

Thank you for responding. I apologize for the truncated part numbers. The part numbers listed in this thread above by vdoalamo are:
https://www.discountinfinitiparts.co...ire-97198jj51e
https://www.discountinfinitiparts.co...ire-97198jj52e

If you click on the link it just calls them wires. I just wanted to make sure that they are the tethers this article was talking about.

gwho

@gwho You are definitely correct, the Infiniti site lists all those headliner support parts as "wires", which is interesting. As I mentioned in my prior posts, when my local convertible top repair shop fixed my headliner, which had a broken tether in the right-rear (passenger side) corner along with a number of other areas along the cord that were fraying and ready to break, they purchased parachute cord to replace the entire headliner support system. Thus, I can't validate whether the parts you've called out are the correct replacements for your specific section of broken tether. Sorry about that.

Bhobbster62,

I have a question. I have one line similar to yours that is frayed but not broken. How did your the shop attach the parachute cord? Did they put it in parallel? How did they attach it to the existing cord? What diameter parachute cord did they use. Any help would be appreciated.

Hello Gary, @gwho

The shop replaced all of the paracord that holds the headliner in place. They said it took around 20-25 feet or so in total. There is one line that runs around the perimeter of the headliner inside that sleeve-of-sorts of the headliner, and then that line runs through paracord loops that are spaced around the perimeter to attached it to the convertible top. You can see this somewhat from the pics. I took a pic of the line width as well, hopefully that helps. I can check with the shop next week to get more details on the cord if you need that. I don't know how they fed the paracord through the headliner sleave.

I'd get better pics, but it's raining pretty good out right now. :-)

Bryan

Bhobbster62,

My apologies for the delay. Thank you for the pictures. That looks like something that you would want an expert to perform. Looks top notch. I will likely try to replace the tethers if that is the problem but would not tackle replacing all the lines as you did.

gwho

Hi James,

I am having the same issue on my vert as well on my driver's side (LEFT). I just wanted to confirm the part number. Would I have to order this part? https://www.discountinfinitiparts.co...ire-97198jj52e

When I spoke to my local Infiniti dealership, he gave me a different part number: https://www.discountinfinitiparts.co...ire-97198jj51a
Though, we spoke over the phone and not in person.

Thanks,
Tharif

According to the diagram there are two different tethers:

This is why you were given two different part numbers.

Do you know which one you need?

Hello! Thanks for the quick response.

So similar to the cases above, the wire that tethers onto the headliner for me has worn out. Specifically, the tethers themselves have worn out at 2 spots on the left hand side (drivers side). The part number is what I am trying to confirm.

Thanks,
Tharif

Also, I am located in Canada. So I can't order parts from the discount Infiniti stores. The cheapest I could find was this on ebay: https://www.ebay.ca/itm/125654978215...Bk9SR-bCrpqAYg

Otherwise I believe Canadian dealerships would charge me 500+ CAD. (370+ USD)

From what I can determine based on the diagram, and the video, you need p/n: 97198-JJ52E. This is the tether that has the four (4) oblong "thingamabobs" that loop onto the headliner tabs. The other tether in the diagram pulls the tether tight front to rear.

Now, being in Canada, I know your options are limited when it comes to shipping and VAT. That said, it may be better to order the tether directly from Japan. I found the tether on Amayama for $167USD (tether). Shipping should be reasonable, even for international, VAT on the other hand...

I also found it for $163USD from Orland Park Infiniti (tether). They are a actual dealership- similar to discountinfinitiparts.com- though their prices are a little better as of late. May want to shoot them a email and see if they will ship to Canada.

Good luck!

if it would save you significant money I wouldn't mind ordering it from somewhere and shipping it to you from the states.

I need mine done too, the whole wrap around thing. The tethers popped out of the metal on one side and also lost the cord itself inside that wraps across the whole thing that the tethers feed in and out of. Now I can't even use the top, and no one will work on it until I fix the headliner
