Key FOB
Key FOB
Hi,
I do not use my G37 to much and I have found it with dead battery a couple of times. This last time that happened I have found that my KeyFOBs are not working anymore. At all, it's like they are dead. I chaged batteries in both fobs but nothing happened. Has this happened to any of you before?
I have not yet tried disconnecting the car battery for a while and see if something resets...should I?

#1, what year is the car?
#2, are there any warning lights on the gauge cluster: specifically, a red or yellow key icon?
#3, what happens when you insert the fob into the key slot?
#4, what is the state of the battery: age, condition, FULLY charged?
First, I would remove the battery and if it is fairly new get it fully tested and charged. If it is old, consider replacing it.
Once the battery is confirmed good/ charged, then you see what the car does and go from there.
As a side note, if you do not drive your car often- or drive very short distamces, you may want to consider buying a battery tender to keep the battery healthy when the car is not used for extended periods of time.

If your car battery is dead or weak, your fobs will not work. Yes, fobs have small batteries for them to be able to send the lock/unlock signals, but the fob batteries do NOT actuate the door locks or other functions, that’s what the car battery is for….the car sees the request from the fob, and commands the desired functions through the bcm, inside the car.
Thank you all for the replies. The car battery seems to be more or less OK. I have disconnected it for the night and this morning the problem was still there. The battery seems to be at 100%, at least according to my charger ( I do have one). I have started a "repair" cycle with it. I tend to think it is not the battery, but I will change it anyhow. We'll see...
EDIT: Now I also get a permanent "double bip" sound coming from somewhere around the back seat every 10s or so even after I have left the car and switched everything off. Also I noticed that the lock/unlock button by the power window switches does not work at all. Sound expensive I'm afraid.

That "beep" is probably coming from the top warning...U just need to reset the top operation by pressing the close top button for around 5 sec. Then your will hear a long beep...your top will be reset then.
Yep, double beep is fixed with the top cycle.
Not being able to lock / unlock with the internal switch is something different for sure. Does the locking / alarm arming still work with a physical key?

Thanks for all the replies.
The double beep disappeared after opening and closing the top, that was it.
Regarding the FOB, actually nothing related to locking system works. Neither lock/unlock buttons on either armrest do anything. When I'm in the car I get the no key message and need to insert the key in the receptacle. When I unlock the car with the std key to get in, only the driver's door is unlocked. Could any of you check if the lock/unlock button in the armrest is supposed to work with no key in the car?. If that's the case I may only have to reprogram the keys, maybe they have lost coding for some reason...

Standing outside of the car, press AND HOLD the UNLOCK button on the key for ≈3-5 seconds... Do the windows roll down?
Check fuse #10 (left foot panel) likely marked as "Room Lamp." This fuse supplies constant 12V+ power to the Door Lock system via the BCM.

I just checked and the LOCK/UNLOCK button for both doors works as intended without the fob in my pocket. Being that neither of your interior buttons work, leads me to believe you have a separate issue not related to the iKey.

Hi, thanks for your reply. I tried any action related to the FOB I can think of. They both seem to be completely dead. I maybe need to add that I installed a smarttop device about two years ago and has been working fine since.
I checked the fuses also and they are fine. Specifically the one you mention, the inner light go out when removed.
Is there any way to know id the FOBs are actually emmitting when you press a button?
Thanks and BR
Ok, I am a little confused. Do the fobs work for the SmartTop feature, but not for the car? Or, are the fobs dead across the board?
Most auto parts places have little display/ kiosks that you can use to test the fob battery. You just hold the fob next to the display- press the buttons- and if good it will "beep." The likelihood of BOTH fobs completely dying is highly unlikely. Even for both of them to lose programming is rare.
What concerns me is that you can not even lock the door with the interior door switches. Those switches operate independently from the fobs. This tells me there is a separate issue not directly related to the iKey fobs.
Without knowing how this SmartTop module is connected, what it's functionality includes, and other technical details, I am out of ideas. But my gut feeling says that this module could be interfering with the BCM somehow.

Smarttop has been working fine till now for about two years. Now it does not work at all. Nothing related to the keys is working and (as you say this is what worries me most) both armrest lock buttons are also not working. I am going to visit a local worshop specialized in coding and central locks to see if the keyfobs are doing anything at all. If the BCM is damaged, then I gues it'll be an expensive repair.
Thanks

Problem solved. Total cost: absolute loss of self esteem (and 5€ for 2 new batteries). Won't go into details, but the summary of the summary is that I am stupid.
One thing, though, the internal armrest lock buttons do NOT work if the car is not receiving signal from the FOB
Thank you all and sorry for the fuss.
