UMM, about the tax thing. If it is a private party sale within the state, meaning you sell in CA to someone who lives in CA, there is no tax. If I buy a car in AZ, and bring it to CA to register it, CA charges me state sales tax. CA cannot charge a CA resident tax AGAIN after the original owner paid taxes and it was sold private party, thats illegal buddy.
Geez. Why do people quote stuff as fact when they haven't the slightest clue what they are talking about. In CA (as well as NJ and I'm sure many other states), you pay tax every time it changes ownership. Let me make this clear for search purposes, unless you have a dealer's resale license, YOU PAY CA TAX WHEN YOU BUY A NEW OR USED CAR IN CA REGARDLESS OF HOW MANY TIMES IT HAS HAD TAX PAID ON IT ALREADY. It doesn't matter if it's a private party, a broker, or a dealer, DMV charges CA state tax when it is registered based on the current tax rate (9-10% in CA) on the amount that was paid for the car. Even if you trade a car in, you pay tax in CA on the FULL purchase amount. In NJ, you'd pay tax on the NET amount of cash/loan-out.
