Makes sense that they'd keep the letter designations, but change the numbers. It shouldn't really hurt them- they just need to brand the letters, and they have been. The ads for the M45 have the Infiniti logo and "The M" or "The New M" underneath it- works fine, sounds great.

Mercedes has upped the numbers for their larger engine sizes, and I don't think it's a big deal. the S550 is out now, but most people just see a large Mercedes, an S-class designation, and think no further.

That's the chassis code. The Z31 would be the old school 300ZX, Z32 the previous generation, and Z33 for the current generation. Notice it doesn't reflect displacement as well. It's just the vehicle chassis code, so it doesn't correlate to displacement.
