Is this the Nav database you're talking about"

I'm curious about how much better it is than the original AVN5435 Navigation CD. I understand that the detail is much better and that it had more Points of Interest. I don't understand why the map data is still from December, 2004? I would think they would update the maps... that's the most important thing (to me anyway).

You'd need to purchase an additional remote box, but then, yes, the steering wheel buttons would work fine. I couldn't give up the steering wheel buttons...

You have me second-guessing the stand-alone. I do take my beater on weekend trips and what-not. So, in that regard, the blackbird or the garmen would fit the bill, probably more so with the blackbird if I ponied up the the HU. If I went with the HU, would I maintain the steering wheel controls?

The treo though.... Blue Tooth? Does the software give voice commands, and, if so, would it pipe through the blue tooth? Small display may not be as problematic.

Thanks again everyone, good food for thought.
I would recommend calling crutchfiled on this one. I know there are some aftermarket control interfaces but I amnot certain about availabilty for the new alpine HUs.

The PAC SWI-X will allow you to retain your steering wheel controls. The SXI-ALP works with Alpine, Kenwood and JVC units.

The treo gives directions on a luod speaker and also, I have navi in both my mercs and I have never or hardly looked at the screen because its all on loud speaker. Trust me man I have Navi and I have been on a trip with a friend who does EPA work all over florida and georgia and trust me when he uses it, I wana buy a Treo. That works great. I am not saying that because I have a phone shop but i am being honest. You will get your job done in less money and you do not need to change your company bcause it does not use your cell company to catch the gps. So you can just buy a Treo and put a sim card in it to make it work without subscribing to a service. Trust me and look in to it. Use your extra cash to another better mod.

Sorry to change the topic, but I have a treo 700w and it's an awesome device. I have to manage about 25 servers 24/7 and this phone helps me do that so much easier. the EVDO connection is pretty fast - not really broadband speed like cable, but MUCH MUCH faster than my old blackberry service or any other internet phone service i've had. Remote desktop works great and you can manage all your servers from the phone. Notice above, I said it was an awesome device, but not an awsome "phone". The phone feature itself is flaky. Every time i pick up a call, there's a lag, so on the other end, they hear the click like i had picked up the call, but there would be a few second delay before they hear me say "hello?". Kinda annoying. Also, the Windows operating system sucks just like on a PC. It needs to be rebooted daily and sometimes does not release system memory when closing programs.

So for those thinking of getting a Treo, it's a great device, but do your research. I'm sure there are better phones out there.

Back from Dominica. Not sure if any of you scuba dive, but one helluva destination.

Saw 2 skylines and a nice supra while I was there. Weird though, as the roads are TERRIBLE. Two-way traffic on a roadway the size of a golf cart path, through mountains. Potholes are an understatement. Couldn't figure out why anyone would own a nice car there. They also get 350 inches of rainfall per year.

Anyway, back to the thread...

Laziness and the dollars and [I]sense[I] have led me to the Garmin 2720. I would love a built-in, or a new Alpine system, but portability and economy have won the day. Still some performance mods on the wishlist, so major audio/visual will have to wait. Intrigued by the treo, but I'm not one for too many gadgets. If you guys were more impressed with the Treo as a phone, maybe.

Anyway, thanks again for all the input. A couple of you will get votes for the coveted "most informational posting award"

Mike

I think you will find that the Garmin will serve you well. I used it extensively on our trip to the mountains and back for Z Dayz.

Yeah but we almost missed every exit... and got a tour of one of the Hospitals in Atlanta because we made a wrong turn. Go Garmin!

You were more than welcome to lead the way.

And we made the turn into the hospital because the cop made us. I didn't know it was a turn only lane.
