Mafs work by running air over a hot wire. The voltage it takes to keep the wire hot is the voltage sent to the computer. Different mafs have different airflow tables ie, 1.4v on one maf might not be the same cfm as another maf even if they were in the same diameter tubing. The maf housing also plays a roll because the larger the housing the less velocity and therefor less air will be metered by the maf. The computer simply takes these maf voltages along with the other engine parameters most notably IAT(intake air temp) and uses this to determine Injector Pulse Width. This is all under full(or near full) throttle. In this way the computer cannot adjust itself because under full throttle it no longer looks at the O2 sensors and this is the only way to see how the combustion event(or how rich or lean it was) turned out. Hope this made sense.

Wow, 50% driveline loss. What kind of trans do you have? LOL.

Makes lots of sense... of course when u r wide open your puter is on a open loop and goes by the preset tables in the computer. But it all comes into more air, more fuel more power. Thats why tuning after a mod is so critcle.. IAT is HUGE part of everything.. haha

5AT LOL.... Just hypin up the mod.. Gonna slap JDM badge on it... sell it for 800 bucks and claim it makes 10 HP..

Didn't know if you knew what open loop was but since you do then you know that is the point that it stops looking at the stock NB O2. My car goes into open loop at around 65% TPS. I don't have much experience with the newer cars with WB's so they might be a little different.

Everything i know is from my Mustang.. i was just learnin to tune it and all that when i fugged up a rod.. damn that Meth injection... (pump stayed on and filled intake full of windshield wiper fluid) but it went open loop around 70 percent, my IAT out of the blower was 240 degrees YIKES... we added the meth/water injection kit.. got it down to 110 and added a bunch of timing and made 60 more to the wheels..

I'm really interested in this mod and love all the source information. My question is without a UTECH or comparable add-on computer, what would the outcome be by just increasing the MAF size with the just the stock G35 computer? Will it make the car run lean or rich? By adding a Pop-charger or other air box, doesn't that in essance also increase the air flow (or at least velocity) through the MAF?

I dont think u should need a UTECH for this mod, but being able to tune your car will get the most out of every mod you install.. as for me UTECH will probably be my next mod for this reason.

the car would misfigure the fuel and lean it out by over 10% and thats not good. your AF would be in the upper teens at best...

the maf sensor is 2.75 inches around, the sensor reads how much air runs through it cause it knows exactly how much air can go around it through a 2.75 inch tube. increasing that tube lets more air go around the sensor and not through it therefore it will read as less air going into the engine and add fuel for less air...

So, with that figure in mind, is there a larger MAF sensor, say 3" from any other Nissan of Infiniti that would also fit our VQ engines that might correct this issue? And more specifically, from the highly technical community, what size MAF sensor should we be looking at for a 75.5mm housing? Is there a 2.86 inch or comparable MAF sensor available?
