Review K&N Typhoon Intake
K&N Typhoon Intake
First, a little history. For about 18 mos. I had a Tanabe axle back as my only modification. It was a quality built exhaust, but very mild in sound. I recently sold it as I decided it just was not giving me enough sound and felt it was a waste of money.
About two weeks ago I pulled the trigger on the K&N Typhoon Intake. Everything I read about this one said it produced good sound and that was my #1 goal. This intake accomplished my goal. The change in sound is wonderful. It sounds stock under 3000 rpm. At half throttle or more after 3000 rpm the car sounds completely different from stock. I love it and driving a 6MT only makes it better.
Anyway, the install was easy and the quality of this kit is excellent. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a more aggressive sound. It sounds much better than my Tanabe ever did and now I don't have to drive around with those ridiculous Tanabe exhaust tips. Those always bugged me. Why so big?

I wanted to provide an honest update now that we recently had some hot weather around here. It was 85 deg that past two days.
Let me start by saying that even with the OEM intake, my G is always more sluggish in hot weather. This is pretty typical of naturally aspirated motors. They don't like heat and the G is no different. However, I think the open design of the Typhoon intake makes the G even more sluggish in hot air temps. At low speeds, the torque and throttle response is weaker. That's the truth. Once the car gets moving and the fresh air makes it into engine, it pulls hard again.
Today we were hit with a cold front. This morning it was 51 deg. and my car pulled much harder than it did yesterday in the 85 deg heat. In fact, I think in cool weather, the open design of the Typhoon intake allows the car to pull harder and have better throttle response than in stock form.
So, there is some tradeoff with power and throttle response depending on the season or where you live. I knew this going in and I'm fine with it. I bought the intake mainly to add more sound to my driving experience. Plus, where I live, over half the year is spent in cool temps.

They sell for $299 on Amazon. I got a $100 Amazon gift for my birthday and I needed to replace the OEM air filters. I felt I could justify the remaining out of pocket cost myself. Not sure I would have pulled the trigger with the Amazon gift card that someone surprised me with. I could not justify the $500intakes offered by some competitors just for better sound.
I felt the same way with my G35.
You do get better sound but at times it feels like the performance went down a little.
I just drive my car on the street so I dont care if my horse power is +/-10hp on a daily basis.

Yeah, the hot air under the hood increases the intake temp. which causes the ECU to reduce timing. The result is a less responsive throttle and less torque until the car gets moving enough to create some cooler air under the hood. It is most noticeable in stop and go traffic. On the highway, it is no different than OEM.

Mine did the same thing. I had to trim down the tube lengths to get the majority of the kink out.
