Went to the store which is 5 minutes from my house with no problem. When coming back I started the car as usual but when I reached the first stop I noticed the shifter was lose and it moved to neutral also I could move it to reverse and park without pressing break. But on the cluster it showed the car was in Drive even with moving the shifter. Drove the 5 minute home with having the hand on the shifter making sure it stayed in the Drive slot. Once I reached home I tried to see if I could make the shifter stay in a single slot but was very lose and the cluster showed it was still in drive. Put the emergency break and turned car off. Turned car on and released break and car was still in drive even with the shifter being in the Park slot. Disconnected battery waited a few minutes and connected again and started car but cluster still showed in drive with the shifter being in park position. Any idea what could be going on?

 

Check underneath the car and make sure the shift linkage is still connected to the shifter stalk. These nuts have a tendency to work loose and/or the rubber bushing deteriorates. The pic in this post shows what to look for.
