Question AT Shifter Assembly Replacement

Took my car to the Dealer this Friday, can came up that I need a new Shifter Assembly, its having problems locking in park on any surface but mainly uphill or downhill.
They quoted me at $680. I have a G37X will any AT Shifter Assembly fit like a base or a S type, and has any one done this before as a DIY. Want to see if this task can be done by myself.

Replacing a shifter assembly is easy, at least on a non-x.

What I find interesting though is that the shifter assembly does not really "hold" the car in park. The shifter assembly is connected to the transmission via metal linkage to move a lever on transmission housing.

It's usually the engaged parking pawl inside the transmission that holds the car in park.

Is the shifter assembly actually coming out of the P position?

If I am unable to fully lock it in the P position it does come out and im able to switch it between R and N. Its weird everything else works D DS and Manual mode. The only problem im experiencing is for it to fully lock in Park.

From: Framingham Ma,
So the push button on the shifter doesn't need to be pressed to shift out of park? And when you put it in park that button doesn't pop? Maybe there is a cottar pin that came off inside the center console?
