2012 g37x coupe valve body replacement (P0720 code)

Hey all,

Long time lurker, first time poster. Been through a million threads via the search feature and have been able to learn a lot about the apparent issues with the 7at.

This past weekend I got the dreaded P0720 code and the transmission wouldn't shift past 3rd gear or go into sport mode. Was able to get the car home and start researching possible fixes, one of which is a valve body/tcm replacement, the other being an entire transmission replacement.

Now I will say thay I'm not your standard DIY guy, I put an LS engine into my BMW 1 series in my garage, and I have QuickJacks and all the tools I'd need to tackle any automotive job.

The main reason for my post is after researching the valve body part number that I need for my 2012 g37x (31705-X436D) I have found it to be discontinued everywhere.

Reading various posts it seems that the valve bodies themselves are relatively interchangeable as long as you stay in the correct model and year, but the TCM itself is coded to either the VIN or trim level of the car (for correct shift algorithms) and are not interchangeable. Some people have said thay they found an exact year, exact model valve body/tcm combo and it was plug and play without dealer coding.

I am having extreme difficulty finding a replacement valve body/tcm combo for a 2012 g37x coupe. I used this thread to learn about the correct Hitachi part numbers on the TCM and solenoids to identify the correct model year but I've gotten nowhere. I have called every vendor thay anyone had success with in the past to try to purchase a remanufactured unit but they are all either out of business or out of stock.

More Info on Hitachi part numbers here:

I am about to go to LKQ pick and pull this weekend because there are some 2012 g37x sedans and I'm hoping that the valve body/TCMs I find there will be the same as the coupe I have but I'm not so sure.
  • Can anyone help to point me towards vendor who would be able to help me? im at a loss and really dont want to do a full transmission swap alone on my back. I just moved and don't have any car friends to help me so I'd be doing the job alone.
  • Also, can anyone confirm that sedan and coupe valve bodies are interchangeable (and not need dealer coding) as long as they are the same model year and trim?

Sorry for the long winded post. Ill be sure to offer the forum some valuable insight once I get this figured out. I really appreciate any assistance.

I don't know the answer to your main question on valve body/tcm compatibility.
but isn't that code more about the ouput speed sensor?
Have you tried testing it or it's wres?

And while you're in there, I'd recommend a shift kit install for sure.
Made my 5AT less of a mush box and sport mode actually like sport mode!

Good luck, and let us know what you find out
