Hey everyone.
I have been doing a lot of CAN bus reverse engineering and wanted to show some of the results:

 

I just found out why the cluster shows an 8th gear. The Japan only GT350-8 had an optional CVT that simulated 8 gears!!
I had no idea that a CVT was EVER used in a RWD platform.

I’m sure the technical aspect will go over my head but that’s really trick!

Would that mean there is a way to trick the cluster into thinking there are TPMS sensors in the car without there being any? Essentially turning off the light.

 

We think alike!! That was the first item I focused on to reverse engineer.
I will start to test this tomorrow on my G37. My two rear TPMS sensors have dead batteries and I hate the yellow TPMS light.

Wouldn't it be nice to plug in a small module into the OBD port and have it turn off the TPMS light?
I hope it works as expected!

On a different note, the interest in the CAN bus has been much higher than expected.
I don't think I have ever posted a video that had 1,000+ views in under 24 hours.

Going forward, there will be a few episodes on how to get started reverse engineering the CAN bus WITHOUT buying an expensive CAN device.
I will show you how to make your own for much less AND you don't need any electronics or programming experience. It will be a kit, like lego.

Fun fact:
After I picked up a 1995 Maxima SE (what a great car!!) I started the DIY site on GeoCities (long dead now) in 1998 showing how to replace brake pads, rotors, alternators, etc. and was very active on maxima.org and GTAMaxima.com.
In 2001, I purchased the motorvate.ca domain and moved all content over there. Then in 2016, started the YouTube channel. It has been a lot of fun!

As it turns out, motorvate.ca is older than YouTube... I just don't get as many page views

Hmm, there was the 8 speed CVT and then there is the 8 speed automatic diesel that never ended up launching until they reworked it in a Mercedes partnership for the 2015 Q50 with the Mercedes diesel and 8 speed auto. Perhaps that's just the remnants of that.

 

Can we stop the gauge cluster from dimming when we turn our headlights on? When it rains during the day and you turn your lights on and it dims you can’t see your cluster at all. Terrible.

 

You can just set the brightness to max using the buttons on the dash shroud can't you?

 

It still dims greatly. I seriously can’t see my gauges when I rains and I live in Florida so it rains a lot.

 

Thats great! I too had a 95 Maxima SE (swapped in the 96 SE wheels 5-spoke) and put a lot of time in the maxima.org site. Then moved onto a 02 Maxima SE and now the 11 G37 coupe. We probably crossed paths back in those days

As much as I would like to have a following of ChrisFix, it will never happen.
With the channel focused on G/Z platform my audience is limited. There were about 360,000 G/Z sold in North America, and out of that very few people work on their own car today. They might not have a garage/driveway, or even the money for tools.... and the fear of messing up and costing more stops many.

So the YouTube channel is a hobby and allows my to play with my audio/video gear, from my eLearning company SpurGear.ca
