I'm new to the forums and didn't know where to turn for these questions so here I am introducing myself and sharing pictures of my ride and asking a couple of questions:
I recently purchased a 2010 G37xS with 196k miles on the odometer. I am the third owner.
The previous owner took *really* good care of the car and it came with a lot of the maintenance history. He said he had the engine oil changed every 3500 miles with high mileage synthetic blend, which is fine and good. Engine, exterior and interior are all in extraordinary condition.
My first question is: How often are you guys actually changing the engine oil on this vehicle? I am about 1000k past the 3500 mile mark at this point but I wondered what other owners of this vehicle actually do as far as that goes.
My second question is: The previous owner says that he doesn't believe the transmission has ever been serviced. It shifts well for the most part but sometimes it jolts a bit, especially if I punch it (which I've probably only done four or five times, total). It's a bit of a jolt or clunk when it happens, so I know something is up. I grew up under the impression that if a transmission has never been serviced and the vehicle is very high mileage, that it's often better not to do anything with it, as flushing can dislodge junk and actually *cause* a failure after the service.
Well this is old advice. The reality is that as far as maintenance goes the G can fit in some and not in others.
Stay wil the oil change between 3-3.5k miles. As far as the transmission goes that advice was for older transmissions with paper filters.
Trans filter for the G is metal and not so great at actual filtering of smaller microns. Your best bet is to drain some fluid to check condition.
196k miles is nothing if it was highway miles mainly.
I disagree with the previous poster regarding the transmission fluid change. With that high of mileage, I'd suggest this G is ripe for a change and would do it ASAP. Automatic tranny fluid does degrade over time, and getting any wear materials out of it is an important step to protect the tranny.
