Exclamation g37 08' coupe rattle on idle

Hey guys! so im fairly new here so please correct me if ive done something wrong . ive searched this topic and the most related problems ive heard is either a bad cat or a heatshield at the back of the car, but it sounds like something else. The car has 150k miles on it so its no spring chicken, however its been looked after well for its age. This noise is more like a metallic rattle and im not familar with whats making this noise, any chance you guys could shed some of your wisdom for me?

thank you i appreciate it!

It could be one of the plastic clips is broken by the exhaust, if you look above your muffler behind the bumper is two metal brackets held in with plastic clips, I had one of those clips break and it caused an annoying rattle at idle and between 3.5 and 4K rpm. I would check those clips just Incase.

Does the sound intensify with revs or remain constant? When my cats went bad, the rattle wound get worse the higher the RPMs climbed which initially led me to believe it was rod knock. I was relieved that wasn't the case but a heat shield rattle may remain more constant; regardless of the RPM.

one thing is for certain, when im driving its always there, maybe it gets a bit quieter when im going 60km but the sound is roughly the same. lol my heart skipped a beat when you said rod knock. hopefully its just the exhaust falling apart, with 150k miles on the clock, i dont blame it. the engine should be ok as i changed all the fluids and has a steady idle, fingers crossed.

Did you change or mess with battery? The tiedown bar can cause rattle

Found what the problem was!! That ring in the middle is loose and was the culprit of the rattle, I’ll have to bring it to an exhaust mechanic so he can weld it together or what not.

I believe by "that ring" you mean your exhaust gasket. Did you get any additional exhaust noise while driving? They wouldn't weld it they would (should) clean it up and replace the gasket so it's nice and tight. You might want to check the other side while it's there.
