Drive Train Vibration

2012 G37x 62k miles with vibration when in drive. Very noticeable when the car is in drive and stopped. You can feel the vibration in the seat and steering wheel. Yeah, it's really noticeable. Put the car in neutral and the vibration is gone.

I’ve been to two dealers. Both dealer mechanics said the vibration is normal (lol). Both have examined the engine mounts and ruled them out. Just got the car back from the dealer who told me it was a defective air conditioner compressor - the mechanic concluded that, when the belt to compressor was removed vibration went away. They replaced the compressor. Received car back from dealer with the vibration still there.

Once again, the dealer is saying the vibration is normal for this engine. Nonsense.

I suspect it could be torque converter. There are no error codes.
The vibration is driving me to distraction. Any ideas on what this might be?

Yeah, I get that. What's it idling at? My idle fluctuates often, around 550-650 in drive. Right around 600 rpm the vibration is the worst. As far as the AC? just turn it off and see if that makes a difference?

I'm getting vibration as well, not sure where it's from as I have had the dealer check the mounts and they said they were fine. I don't really trust them though so I was thinking of going to specialty z to get it checked. vibration in this car is not normal because my car used to be super smooth. I never used to be able to feel any vibration during idle, now it's there.

The dealer replaced the compressor. Didn’t effect it at all

No. but you know, that makes sense. The vibration only occurs when in gear. I’m going back to the dealership tomorrow to speak with the mechanic and have him experience the vibration ( something you would think he would have checked before giving me back the car). I’ll report back to the forum what I find.

Yes. That’s how this vibration showed up. Went from smooth to heavy vibration. I will report back to the forum what I find out tomorrow t the dealership.

I ‘ve also contacted a VP of supplier relations at Nissan corporate for assistance. Let’s see if some old fashioned pulling of some strings helps. I’m not confident it will: The dealer network is very independent and somewhat out of control from Nissan corporate in Tennessee.

The description of your issue could really be any soft/flex point in the drive line...transmission mount, u joints, driveshaft center support bushing, diff bushing(s) and even the motor mounts...

The change of the ac compressor really sounds like a bit of a lazy diagnosis as does the visual inspection of the motor mounts...the motor mounts on these cars are very hard to visually inspect for anything less than very obvious damage until they are unloaded and even if they aren't physically broken they could just be very worn and cause vibrations

Interesting... I’ve never thought of the trans mount mostly because when my cars in gear it isles so low, then going to neutral/park will make the vibration go away, but the idle jump up a hundred rpm. I’m waiting for the warm weather and some cash flow before I start diving into any of my mounts. How easy are these mounts to DIY? (Motor mount, trans mount?)

Your idle fluctuation is probably not related to the OP's drive line vibration...idle fluctuation is mostly likely from a vacuum leak or or a dirty AF sensor or a bad O2 sensor or dirty throttle bodies or some combination of those...at the age of these cars now its not uncommon that you have two separate problems especially relating to rubber components that have worn out (i.e. idle fluctuation and rotted vacuum lines, driveline vibrations and rotted mounts/bushing...they're all old rubber bits but separate issues)...

engine mounts aren't too bad from what I can tell on the RWD cars...trans mounts are super easy on all the cars (probably a 30 minutes thing in the driveway including getting the car in the air)...the engine mounts on the AWD cars are a nightmare though....you have to pull the LCAs from what I can tell (at the very least on the drivers side just to get to the lower mount bolt because of the sub frame)...I have a set waiting to go in on my AWD but just don't have the disassembly time for whats involved

Yeah I figured my fluctuation was something unrelated, going to clean everything out and see what happens. I have an AWD, which sucks I guess... I’ll try and throw it on a lift at work and see what it looks like and go from there, I have some good techs who would be good for working on my car

Yeah so the dealer mechanic replaced the AC compressor. Gave the car back to me. The vibration is still there

Yup - all your symptoms are identical to mine. Went from smooth to plenty of vibration. The dealer mechanic has ruled out the motor mounts, transmission mounts. I now suspect the torque converter.

... and yes, the dealer has tried to tell me that it's normal for g37s to vibrate. Really pis**ses me off to be fed a line by barely competent mechanics. The dealer in my area has no experienced mechanics.

I hear you Hashim about the motor mounts. The motor mounts have been checked twice by one dealer and once by second dealer. I'm now thinking torque converter.
