What does Infiniti G37 drive train warranty cover?
Hi all,
A friend of mine recently picked up a used 2012 Infiniti G37 coupe. It's got a clean car fax. Service history records etc. the car drove and sounded great at the dealership. But once he got home and really listened to his motor idling in the driveway, he noticed a loud knocking sound from motor. It sounds like the engine is knocking. The oil level is fine.. But it could of just been topped of by the dealer. It's got 50k miles so I guess it's still under Infiniti factory warranty.. Is this something that He can take to the Infiniti dealership and ask them to inspect ?? Will they charge him? Or would this fall under the power train warranty...
Please help. Thanks

It would fall under powertrain warranty.
But since he just bought it, it should be free none the less.
It's probably nothing since VQ makes tapping sounds all the damn time. What gas did he use? If he put in cheap gas. than yeah.
If he just bought it from the dealership, take it back and let them look at it.
It would fall under powertrain warranty.

I was just wondering if I went to an Infiniti dealer, would the look at it for free?
If it's still under warranty, and the issue is covered, then yes, it'll be free. And he'll get a loaner while they examine/fix it. Now if they find the car's been modded and returned to stock, he'll be SOL and will receive a bill for their time.

If the knocking is due to some engine component(s) failure, proof will need to be provided to show car was maintained (or more specifically engine) for warranty to be honored.
What do the service records indicate?

Maybe just a bad tank of gas? Try to run all the gas out and fill her back up with 91+ octane. But if you can hear inside the cabin (with windows closed?) then it's REALLY bad. Just take to your closest Infiniti and see what they say.
Just take it to Infiniti they will go ahead and check it for you so from what they told me if they find something that isn't covered they charge you a diagnostic fee and deduct it from Bill if you choose to fix it with them but it should be covered under powertrain warranty I jut got my engine replaced after it started overheating all the time and after they replaced the thermostat, radiator they couldn't figure what was wrong and they got the okay for a new engine under warranty without paying anything and they did not ask me for any maintenance records in which I had them all in case but no questions asked

Records indicate steady oil changes.. However there's a gap for about 20k miles/ 1 year, where it doesn't show any service records. I'm wondering if Inifiniti will question the oil change records for that period.. Car fax doesnt show anything for that period of time... Does Infiniti need to see oil changes every 3k miles or something for the drive train warranty to be honored??

Having some records is better than none. Really depends on the service manager and attitude of the nissan warranty rep assigned to your case.
I do all my own oil changes but keep the receipts of oil/filters and a log book of all maintenance performed. Technically it's 3750 to 7500 depending on use. Really though unless you do only highway driving (at highway speeds), most of us probably fall to the shorter OCI, or somewhere in between.

It's the strangest thing..you cannot hear the motor knocking much from outside with the hood open.. But when sitting in the cabin, you c an clearly hear it knocking very loudly.. And there's no mistaking that it's coming from the motor because it speeds up and slows down with the Rpms. I took a long screwdriver and listened to where it was coming from and it was coming from the top left side of the motor. Any ideas what this could be??
Mine sounds like one also before it warms up but still a little noisy in general and seems to be normal for everyone and believe its just part of the VQ engine.
Your buddies powertrain is a 6 year, 70k miles. Have him bring the car to the local infiniti dealership and get an oil change and let the service guy know all of his problems and all that good stuff that hes having with his car.
Reason being is an oil change is cheaper than a diagnostic which usually will run more than 100 bucks ( mine wanted 150 ) and plus the advisor will have his tech check all your concerns as well as do the free multi point inspection. So itll be money in his pocket plus a piece of mind knowing if something is wrong theyll be better trained and equipped to find it and hopefully able to resolve it under warranty for him.
