I had to replace mine 2 years ago as it snapped while I was on the highway, took it to dealership since it was still under warranty, drove around for like 4 days while part was ordered, literally took them 12 minutes to install I was in and out.
Was there any c clips or a particular way you had to remove the passenger side cv axle?
Has anyone replaced the RF axle? Can it just be pulled out at the diff or is there a spring C-clip retaining the diff end as the groove shows? The FSM FAX-17 is of no real help.
There are four bolts at the diff, three labeled in red here.
The green arrows are where the play is. Axial and radial play. Below is a video of the play.
Q: is the output carrier with four bolts bad and I need a diff or can the shaft be replaced to fix? There is no leakage at the shaft output of the diff.
IIRC, for the passenger-side, the circlip is internal to the differential. The end of the driveshaft is tapered to force the circlip to expand before locking down on the groove. Oddball design...
Not on this car, but on others (Audi, GM, etc.) I used a heavy crowbar and had someone turn the axle as I kept pulling on the bar. They always popped out (w/ the clip attached to the stub). I don't know why Nissan uses a internally-fitted clip, but...
Maybe I misunderstood something, but what are you trying to remove? The axle half-shaft will pop out of the differential. Those 4 bolts are actually 5, I believe and that is the retainer plate for the side bearing:
Do you think you need to replace the bearing? If so, p/n: 38440-AR00A (verify before you buy).
Correct me if I am misunderstanding the situation.
Yes I am fairly certain I need to replace the bearing and that is the PN and I guess it is 5 bolts. That is probably the only thing I need to replace other than the boot(s). Got another axle coming and boots to replace for the other side.
Pretty sure I do not have said special tool. Can this be removed with "care" using other methods/tools or rip apart and get another? Can I just take the 5 bolts out and reach the bearing??
You, again, have been very helpful. Thank you so much!
My new steering lock still has a long lead time to start the car on occasion, 4/10 times.
My rear axles are clicking and I plan on greasing them and trans F/F all next weekend.
I will let others who have worked on these differentials chime in. The few times I replaced bearings on other cars I used a puller or took the part to a local shop that has a press. Many chain parts stores will rent bearing pullers if you need to go that route.
That said, looking at the FSM, is it even possible to replace the bearing with the differential still in the car?
I found this pic from gtrlife.com that shows the front diff disassembled:
The inner race/ roller bearing cage assembly is pressed onto the differential while the outer race is pressed in the cover plate (the 5-bolt). You will definitely need a puller to get the inner race off of the carrier.
