Difficulty shifting from park

Hi all,

I'm pretty new to my G37 sedan - about a month now. Overall I love it! I am exeriencing the clumsiness it has shifting at times and learning how to minimize that - but really love the car. I am, however, experiencing one thing I wanted to put out the group.

Whenever I park on any sort of an incline it can be a real challenge getting the transmission out of park. I've tried all sorts of ways to set the brake
- brake first then move to park
- move to park then set brake
- move to neutral then set brake
- etc

No matter what I do, I seem to have to muscle the shift out of park and come upon a hard "clunk" as the transmission moves into reverse. This is really disturbing and concerning. Not sure if I'm doing something wrong, it should expected or if I should take it in.

Appreciate your thoughts on this, as other cars I have had do not experience this harsh of a reaction shifting from park!

Thanks in advance!!!

To correctly set the parking brake on an incline do the following.

1) Apply and hold regular brake pedal
2) Shift into neutral and apply parking brake
3) Release regular brake, car will move slightly, allow it to settle
4) Shift into Park (you may or may not need to press the regular brake to do this)

To release the parking brake on incline

1) After starting car, press and hold regular brake, shift into appropriate gear
2) While applying regular brake (and in gear), release the parking brake.

If you're still having issues moving the shifter, it could be an indication of other problems. Parking brake should applied sufficiently enough to hold the car. If it's not holding it, the parking brake could need adjustment or be worn.

With a manual car, it's habit to set the parking brake even on level surfaces. On steeper surfaces in addition to the parking brake, I'll leave it in 1st or reverse.

Thanks jsolo

What you shared is generally what I do but the car hasn't responded well. I'll keep a close eye on it and take it in if it continues. The parking brake does go quite far down when I set it.

Cheers!
