Ya, would've preferred to go into the motor under conditions of choice & with more cash flow though. Ugggh.

Outcome sounds pricey. Perhaps some gasket or seal failed, resulting in immediate oil pressure loss. Probably won't know for sure until the engine is disassembled.

Probably not the best idea to redline a higher mileage engine....

At 144K miles, one has to question is the repair justifiable. Perhaps a cheaper solution would be to get a used engine from a wrecked car or similar. Then it's just a [simple] swap of parts, less down time too.

Btw, which urban dictionary definition of scarf is appropriate? Urban Dictionary: Scarf

Plenty of used engines on eBay around $2.5K

Scarf one up!

Already spying motor swap options. PRAYING I don't have to go to that extent. Gonna find a shop in the next couple days to sort things out. This sucks.

Well....as they say, trouble comes in three's. Wife's Tahoe just blew the water pump AND trans failure at the same freaking time. So the family hauler is first up for repair which gives me unwanted time to figure out how to approach the G repair. IF the issue is a broken rod, spun rod bearing..... which direction is the "better" route? 1. Rebuild & freshen up with some aftermarket parts, or 2. Sh*tcan the motor & replace it?

IF rebuild/refresh - what can be mildly done that'll sniff some performance increases over stock?

IF replace - who are the go-to suppliers of quality engines?

This totally sucks. Thanks for any knowledgeable recommendations.

35Sport....that was a great thread! Unfortunately I'm no mechanic, have no tools, no time, and just couldn't do it myself. After having my G sit for much too long, I did go into an action plan. Sourced a used 3.7 through my mechanic....out of another 37 that was totalled from behind. It's being installed now and I'll be back on the road by Friday night. ALMOST, dumped my ride out of necessity for a car....but in the 11th hour this deal surfaced. I am soooo glad I will be keeping my car, at least for now. Will post an update with some pics when I can. QUESTION --- I noticed there was talk about changing the timing gasket from cardboard to metal....did you & should I while this is happening?

I would defiantly have the shop check for the paper gasket it was in some older 3.7 engines i believe the issues were fixed in the 2011 and up models but i wouldn't quote me on that without a double check, but if the "new" engine is out and with a competent person it wouldn't be to hard to check for it and upgrade it if needed.

Might also want to do plugs and other routine maintenance on the engine while everything is in reach also motor mounts. Also how many miles are on the engine that's going into the g?

good luck

Sorry for the late response, YES DO IT NOW WHILE YOU CAN! I didn't have the extra time to spare and my donor motor only had 47k so I still have time to replace mine. Here's a helpful thread with links to other helpful threads about the issue.

That's exactly the sound my FX35 made just before it threw a rod.
It had oil problems too. Didn't smoke or seem to burn it. Didn't leak. But went through oil like a sailor goes through beer.

Then it started knocking badly, I took it straight to the dealer who confirmed it was a toasted connecting rod bearing. Tried to get it home and it died in a puddle of oil on the roadside.

Sorry man, it's an awful feeling I know.
I'm waiting for a replacement engine I ordered from Remann's now.

Ended up with a motor sourced from a wrecked '11. Tore out the trashed motor & had the replacement in and car reassembled in two days to the tune of $3500 OTD. It'll do for now.....will probably trade in for a newer G37s or maybe a GS350 f-sport within 12-18 months time. Happy to have my ride back....I do love to drive this car! Keeping a much closer eye on oil consumption.
