Broke an axle at the track last night.

Broke an axle at the track last night.

Figured it might happen but not on street tires. Last night first run of the night I stage up and brake stall at about 1500 rpm. Tree lights up and I launch. The launch itself felt great until I hear a loud click , high revs and grind as I slow roll forward. At first I thought somehow I was in neutral or had somehow hit the shifter on launch. I turn the car off and back on to the sound of grinding. The crew runs up and tells me I'm done and push me back. I could hear the squeaking on the driver's side almost like a wheelbarrow wheel that needed grease. Then to add insult to injury I had to go home from the track and come back with my tow hook which was withe the spare tire in my garage. I just left it alone today and will look tomorrow to verify it's the axle and not something in the diff that broke but I figure if the sound is there pushing the car in neutral it's definitely an axle. I'm open to any comments. Crap feeling to break down on the line like that. Seen it happen to many but never truly understood just how crappy it feels till now. I will say that 22 psi and those 285 Hankook Ventus didn't spin at all. Maybe the should've. .....

Join the club. I had to hold up track runs for the tow truck to come and pull me all the way to the end, they won't push a wounded car back after the next car has staged.

The good news is that it's not a difficult fix. You can find a used axle much cheaper than new (I paid about $125 I think) and it's not a difficult repair. Good luck.

Thanks. I passed the time behind the water box looking at those pics of your carnage. I had to push mine about 300 yds to get outside the gate before the track closed. GF tried to help and I made her get in the car and steer. A hard head made a soft *** because I worked legs heavy in the gym yesterday and was reminded in the first hundred yards.

Well, it wasn't an axle. When prepping to remove the axle I happened to rotate the wheels. At the same time I noticed that the diff flange rotated the u joint but the carbon shaft remained static. I pulled the shaft towards the front and the shaft separated from the aluminum u joint. A quick call was made to PST and Mark said the quick way to see what he could do is to bring the shaft over to the shop. Today I took the 2 hour ride and let him take a look. From my layman view there was no damage to the carbon shaft and for all I could see it looked like the adhesive simply failed. I don't think my car is some Monday morning factory ringer and I seriously doubt I make anywhere near the rated failure torque of the driveshaft. Mark from PST was a pure gentleman and when I asked what he thought he said it wasn't clear but possibly a mistake during production or a bad batch of adhesive. He took my info to build a new shaft that should arrive tomorrow. Overall I feel like PST lived up to their reputation. Here's some pics.

When I finally do my swap I'm going with the aluminum ds. I don't trust the CF ones. That design doesn't look good the way the u-joint threads into the cf.

Glad they are standing up for their product though. Many companies these days wouldn't.

When I bought my driveshaft I looked for Aluminum and I don't think anyone will make them anymore. That u joint isn't threaded in, the grooves are to hold the adhesive. That's the way the adhesive manufacturers recommend. However Nissan uses a smooth bore and driveshaft shop followed their lead. PST handled my case just the way I'd expect a stand up company to do. If they were perfect we probably couldn't afford to buy from them.

Been a little skittish about getting in it , but everything is well in G-ville. In the end I now have 2 complete sets of spare axles and another 6MT differential sitting in the garage.
