7AT terrible freeway downshifting

Hi Guys!

I was wondering if anyone has had any issues while cruising on the freeway and for whatever reason you had to gun it. Today and a different time i had to gun it(floored it) suddenly and both times it down shifted into a gear so close to redline i didnt move anywhere and got smoked by an accord. The other time it was my friends ISF. I understand ISF is in a different league but today with the newer v6 accord smoking me that drew the line for me lol.

i hope some of you guys that have experience and might be able to chime in. Do you guys prefer manual downshift? do you guys floor in auto mode(like i did)? This is my first automatic car i've owned also.. i've always been a manual kinda guy

I have experienced the same thing in my 08 5AT, giving it 3/4 pedal let it grab a lower gear then get in the gas may help you get the response your looking for.

Make sure you have the shifter to the left in Sport mode, even if you're not shifting it manually via the paddles or shifter. It's a completely different animal when you have it over there.

I think that might be the only way, never to WOT. but i notice repeating it is sometimes difficult it may downshift to correct gear one time then a gear too low another time..

I actually test drove the IS-F before buying the G and was so unimpressed by the gearbox in that...8 gears IMO was just too many. But we'll save that story for another day.

So my previous car was a Mustang GT (that didn't even have a manual mode) and I could just floor it and it would always find the right gear although the shifts sucked and downshifting was slower than I would have liked. I've only had my IPL (automatic) for maybe 2 months and although the downshifts are significantly smoother/quicker, it does not always find the right gear if you leave it in auto mode and need to floor it (for whatever reason...) which can be rather annoying.

What I have found to work is dropping it down into 3rd or 4th manually (typically 4th on the highway -- whatever puts me around 5000 rpm) and then accelerating. Sometimes I put into DS mode first other times I just use the paddle shifters. Depends on situation.

I definitely agree with you though, it sometimes will pick a gear too low which puts you very close to redline.

I was also interested in an ISF but it was hard to justify having one.. I had a hard time picturing myself using the car for daily multiple errands and as a grocery getter. the raw sport look of it seemed too much for a daily car. the car looks great! but attracts too much attention and not to mention the 15 city mpg made it out of the question for me. My G is low key but does it all.

I think you're spot on.. I did some messing around with the paddles and while it takes a little more time than punching the pedal a double tap to the left paddle will put me into 4th.

Also you mentioned being around 5k. its great thing to be aware of it's something i overlook(especially with an auto) and often rely on the butt dyno too much lol
