Weird engine noise on a 2008 G37 coupe

Hey all,

I bought a used G37 2008 a few months back and yesterday I started hearing a weird ticking sound from the engine.

Below is the link to the video which captures the exact sound.

Any help will be much appreciated, because I am kind of worried.

Sounds like valve chatter to me; could also be the timing chain.

How many miles on the car?

Mine (08 sport coupe) also makes the same noise, my dealer said it was normal on these cars. I did some investigating and listened to a 09 coupe on the lot after it had warmed up same noise. I listened to my '12 loaner G37x sedan with 2000km on it, same noise, but a lot quieter, only heard with the hood open.

3 Gs in my family and mine was the only one that started making this noise.

I brought it to the dealer and they upgraded the ECM software. The noise became a lot more subdued after that. Sounds normal to me now.

what you need to do is buy a bottle of degreaser, spray down your ENTIRE engine bay, and pressure wash under there.... your engine bay is filthy. change your air intake filters while you're at it. they probably look the same color as your engine bay....

How funny; I was concentrating on the noise and did not even notice how dirty the engine bay is, but you guys are right... YUK!

I'm on my 3rd G and have never noticed that noise, but then I haven't spent that much time with them running with the hood open...

Unfortunately that's what happens when you live in the UAE.
I have 60000 miles on the car, and the noise just recently started.
Do you think I should be worried ?

I had that noise so had the ECM reprogrammed and started using the Nissan ester oil. The noise hasn't come back. I'm not pleased with having to spend $12/quart for motor oil but I'm not inclined to change what's been working. It may be purely coincidental but I noticed the noise on colder temperatures days when I had to make multiple stops and restart the engine without letting the engine get cold. I never had the noise from a cold start.
