Getting a new Tranny
So, we always post when we feel a dealership has done us wrong or treated us badly. I figured it only fair to post a positive interaction as well.
I stay in the Chicagoland area, more specifically the west suburbs. I take my car to Infiniti of Clarendon Hills as I typically receive good service from them. I took my car in yesterday with a complaint about my 6th gear (a little over 59k on the dash). At over 2k RPM I would always have to hesitate before shifting into 6th gear (no matter what road speed or gear I was coming from). Figured the synchro was screwing up. Today they told me, "Yea 6th gear's synchro was bad, too much trouble to rebuild the tranny and we just prefer not to, so we put a new one in your car."
Not sure I buy the whole "too much trouble" part but I'm not complaining about a new tranny. Extended Warranty FTW. More importantly I wanted to acknowledge Infiniti of Clarendon Hills for being a stand up dealership and let the G community know about them.

Always nice when a dealer doesn't hassle you about an issue. Great they pretty much took care of it with no questions asked, however, you're right... any transmission issue is fixed with a completely new unit... old transmission goes back to corporate and its repaired there, its not feasible for the dealerships to do tear downs, so they just swap it as a unit. Everyone keep this in mind when the slave cylinder goes bad. Hint hint lol.
Sorry to threadjack; I don't know a lot about manual transmissions and synchros, but when my tranny is cold, I have trouble getting into second and have to double clutch to get it into gear smoothly. Otherwise, if I try to "force" it in, it grunts a little before it goes in. After it warms up, it's fine. Jsolo and I have discussed this a bit and he seems to be having the same "problem." Is this a problem?

I don't really consider this a problem. The last MT (4th gen z28 6mt) I had exhibited similar characteristics. To me it's more a nature of the beast type of thing. Also, even on the coldest days, I only let it warm up for a min or so (unheated garage kept). I bet if it was allowed to warm up further (10-15 min?), the fluid would be sufficiently viscous to permit better operation of the syncros.

Yea, I've heard good things about Lisle too. I know a couple of the guys in Clarendon Hills came from Lisle. I bought my G from Fields Infiniti but they are too far for service. Clarendon Hills had recently opened and was the closest and so I started going them.

Just got my car back...everything is great! Still waiting on the clutch pedal to stiffen up a bit and all shifting is silky smooth.
Solo - To your point, I asked about the trans and the service rep stated that the tranny was factory new and not remanufactured. Whether its new or remaned its better than my old one!

^^Lol.. Lets hope the replacement (notice the word used) trans lasts another 60K or more. My 6th gear also feels a bit more notchy than the other gears, but I just assumed that was because there are fewer syncro's for gear 5/6 (iirc). At the rate I drive, i'll be surprised to see 60K by the time the car is 10 years old.

Yea, in all honesty it's had this problem since I got it. I thought that it was driver error and I needed to adapt. Then i started asking, "well since 6th is an 'overdrive' gear is it designed like this purposely"? After a while, I just couldn't take it anymore.
You threadjacker you!

I'll try not to worry about it. I just don't want to run into the same situation as the OP and have to get a new tranny! i don't let my car warm up either really also in an unheated garage. Seeing other guys experiencing the same thing is reassuring. Thank you!

Is this your first MT? I was picky about every single noise in the camaro - the rattle with the clutch engaged (marbles in a can), noises when taking off from a stand still, etc. The car lasted a long time without any major trans issues. Had I not blown a rotted brake line I'd probably still own the car. Eventually got used to it and paid little attention unless something changed.
