check engine light on but no problem with car

Hello,
Has anyone had this issue. About a couple weeks ago, a light on the dash came on saying that my gas cap was not on properly. I unscrewed it and rescrewed it. The gas cap light went away a day later. However, the check engine light came on. I recently put more gas into the car and made sure that the gas cap was tighten completely. I have driven for over a week and the check engine light remains on. I don't feel or see any problem with the car. I just don't have time to take it in to the dealership currently. It doesn't seem like a big deal. Anyone have similar experiences? thanks.

Gas cap not dealing properly possibly?

The code for a loose gas cap can also indicate other problems as well. I don't have the FSM handy but doesn't an EVAP leak trigger the same code?

Just because you dont feel any symptoms doesnt mean youre not sick. It's the same thing with a car. Either bring it to the dealership or get a OBD reader and read the code.

A lot of auto parts stores will check your codes for free and let you know what the reading is.

I had a "phantom" ses light appear a few years back. It would come on and absolutely nothing in the car seemed to be wrong. I brought it to the dealership and they said that all i needed was an ECU update because the code that was popping up was for something that wasnt even a particular part of my vehicle. They did the update and its been fine since.

My old camaro would throw a code for MAF sensor 2-3x a year. Would clear it and problem went away for a few months. Eventually I got tired of this and replaced the sensor. Codes continued. The guy working on the car took the sensor back and said to just ignore it since it comes so rarely and causes no issues, and a code reset makes it good for a while. Wasn't worth the time/money to troubleshoot further.

I had a Nissan Maxima in which the check engine light would not go out even though there was nothing wrong. Only the dealer could reset it. I put a piece of black tape over the light and drove it for two more years. I was not going to pay the dealer just to reset the light.

Take it to AutoZone and have them pull the code (it's free).

+1

If the CEL isn't blinking at you it's *probably* something emissions related (loose or bad gas cap). One of my previous cars would go though a purge control valve about once a year.

I would still take it in to get the code(s) read as soon as possible.
