Tranny ?

So I am trying to narrow down my list of cars I am looking at. The G is definitely near the top. If I decide to go with it, I'm not sure which tranny to go with. My last 3 cars have all been manuals and I feel that is what I'd rather have, however I would definitely want to test drive any car prior to buying it and am open minded to the right auto-manual (or whatever you want to call it). I test drove the 7AT tonight and found the car was overall really good. The lag between upshifts (in manual mode) though was really annoying, especially at higher rpm. I thought it downshifted quite nicely and quickly. I want to drive the 6MT, however my local dealer does not keep 6MT in stock (apparently they had 1 for nearly 2 years on the lot in the past that wouldn't sell and now will never have one again). I did drive a 370z 6MT a few days ago however and while I thought it was fun to toss around and such, the tranny noise and vibration was overwhelming. Since my local dealer won't have an 6MT is that a fair comparison? Will the G be just as loud and vibrate just as much? Other option is to look for a used 6mt local to test drive, but I'm losing patience and sleep. Thanks.

6mt all the way! You won't be disappointed. Also, if you ever try to sell it, 9 out of 10 people inquiring will ask if it is a manual and will lose interest if you tell them it's auto.
I had an auto G35 and after a month I got bored and wished I had the 6mt.

I find that funny ...
Dealers "can't sell" manuals and stiff people on the trade in value because of it...
Yet it seems here most people desire the 6-spd

I guess that tells you we are in the minority, which is why we never get all the upgrades from model year to model year or generation to generation that we all so desire.

Ahhhh ... the Manual vs. Auto question.

It's the same with every car. It's all personal choice really.

In the G37 they are both good. Just pick whichever you prefer.

I realize the choice is preferance, but I was looking for someone who could compare the 6MT in the z to the g, since I have been unable to drive the G with 6MT. Is it just as harsh? or more refined. Thanks

The parts used for the transmission and (for the most part) the feel of driving the G and Z are the same. Except for the syncromatch in the Z.
During a test drive of a 6MT G37, I felt a bit of vibration and thought the AT was slightly more refined.

I have a love/hate relationship with my 5AT. Love the comfort but hate the overly lazy 1-2 shift. Plus my previous car was 6MT and I'm starting to miss going through the gears.

One thing though, having the 5AT keeps me from doing stupid stuff like burnouts LOL!
