exhaust break in period?

Is there such a thing?

Notice that it smells. Could it just be some leftover residue because it's a new muffler?

I've heard at a couple places that a new exhaust takes a month or two to break in, and afterwords

Muffler’s tone will begin to change gradually? Deeper? Louder? Quieter?

What is the smell? If it is exhaust fume smell, you might not have it installed correctly...I'd check that quicklike.

If it is just random burning smells, that is relatively normal as it gets a few heat cycles into it. I have seen a variety of arguments out there on exhaust break-in period. My personal experience is that there is a break-in, and the overall result is just a bit "smoother". I have had some get a bit louder, but more often it just seems to sound less choppy and cleaner at idle and across the rpm line.

Just my .02...

Probably just the oils/etc. from the fabrication process burning off. If it doesn't go away in a few weeks, I'd take a second look.

It's just the initial lubrication of the muffler bearings.

Mufflers that come with packing material (usually straight-through designs) will have a weird smell when new. The smell should go away as it goes through a few heat cycles. The tone will keep on changing as the packing keeps on burning off but you will never notice since it's a slow process.
