1st & 3rd Gear???

Hey everyone,

I was just wondering cause my 1st and 3rd gear kinda feel weird when I push the shifter into each of those gears.

Whenever im at a stop and put the shifter in 1st sometimes it will kinda go halfway and kinda pause like something is blocking itish but it will go all the way. And if I take it out of gear and then put it back it in, it will engage smoothly.

When I shift to 3rd gear some of the throws feel shorter and some of them feel longer in 3rd gear???

Maybe it might be me or is the clutch / synchros / tranny messed up?

My 1st is hard to get into too sometimes, but only when it's cold. Does the symptom go away after the car warms up?

Try this. After you go into first, go back into neutral. But, instead of going back into first, let out on the cluch, and then step back on it, and go back into first. Do you still feel the resistance? If you do, that is your 1st gear synchro.

Another test.

Step on the clutch, but instead of going into 1st gear right away, wait ~5-10 seconds, and then go into first. Do you still feel the resistance?

I also feel this only when going into 3rd though. Feels like metal on metal contact.

I have that same thing with 1st gear.

It feels like it doesnt go in all the way and not smooth, i put it in neutral and right back into 1st and it goes all the way in like butter.

Ill try to let off the clutch in between and see if i still get it.

For me it is just 1st. Sometimes it doesn't want to go in. So I have to back out in to neutral and then throw it in first and it engages.

It seems like if I push in the clutch and wait a millisecond longer to shift, it usually goes in like butter. Also, pushing the clutch further down helps (by also forcing you to wait slightly longer to shift). Taking the revs a little higher before shifting also seems to help.

2nd and third gear shifts have been much, much better. When you're not comfortable with the way something is working, try to adjust.

I think our transmission and funky clutch have a really high learning curve. This is my first MT so I'm still getting the hang of the whole thing. I've felt the same things...especially a hard 2nd shift, but lately i've been trying to adjust my timing and it's actually resulted in the shifter just gliding into the right gear like I think it should.
