Disable transmission auto downshift?

Sup all,

Anyone know if its possible to disable the automatic downshift when in manual mode on the 7AT? i know its there as a safety precaution but it drives me nuts when it keeps going to 1st gear when you slow down but are still moving. (for example, you cruise to a red light and then it turns green, and instead of smoothly accelerating in 2nd gear, it jumps in 1st and then u have to switch right away...) I have driven stick most of my driving life and use 1st only to take off, and i never downshifted to 1st while still moving, so i find it quite annoying that this car does it. I know it sounds a bit odd, but im just wondering if its possible to do this?

Thanks,
-IgS

Unless you are able to reprogram the ECM, there's no way to change the way the 7 speed auto box downshifts. I'd suggest using DS mode and just shifting manually if it really bothers you.

I think the OP was using DS but even in DS it'll default to 1st gear if going too slow.

Yea this is during manual mode only, i dont care about how it shifts in D as i dont have to worry about anything. It just bothers me when it goes back to 1st and becomes very touchy... i guess i can ask the dealer.. although im pretty sure of the response im going to get :-/

I've experienced this as well. For the most part it seems that DS mode will leave you alone, the one exception seems to be when slowing down and moving in a relatively straight line, like pulling up to a light. Slowing down while cornering seems to be ok (it'll leave you in 2nd or 3rd), but when slowing down for a light, it seems to shift down by itself. I'm still taking it easy on mine since its so new, but this has led to some unintentional rocket starts (thinking I'm still in 2, but being auto-shifted into 1).

I'd be a happy camper if that can be defeated, but I'd also be surprised.

I've noticed this too when in manual mode (I'm a new G37 owner). I was surprised because automatics that downshift automatically when slowing down in manual mode usually don't go into 1st unless you come to a complete stop. This one will go into first somewhere around 10 mph, IIRC.

^ Good luck, but I'm sure the dealership won't don't anything as it's functioning as designed. Keep us posted.

The TCM would require custom reprogramming to do this. I would be very surprised if the dealer gave a ray of hope that they would even consider it. And I would guess that if someone custom programmed their car's TCM to do that Infiniti would void the warranty.
