2 things. 1 when they do emissions don't they put something in exhaust pipe for co2.and 2nd is the test pipes do give off an heavy odor of gasoline.
I can't speak for all states but I recently had my 04 Z smogged in AZ. They didn't even bother using the sniffer nor did they pop the hood. I paid them 30 bucks, they plugged in the OBD2 connector for less than 30 seconds, unplugged it and said you passed.
I asked the guy since I was amazed at how lax it was if I were to put a turbo on the car would it make a difference. His answer was, as long as it doesn't throw a code the car still passes.
I got use to it pretty fast. It's worse because the weather is cold so your fuel mixtures change slightly. I kind of like the smell, it reminds you of the old muscle cars. At idle you can definitely smell it.

It changes the tone of the exhaust and smooths it out a little bit. I didn't prefer it, but I'm sure others would. There wasn't any rasp which was a plus and I know there's gains to be made with the headers with a custom tune.
