Do you shift yourself or let the car shift automaticaly in break-in period?

Do you shift yourself or let the car shift automaticaly in break-in period?

Greetings:

I am driving the new 09 G37x (it has about 75 miles when I pickup and it now has 250 approx) from home to work with 20 miles highway one way. In break in period, the manual advises not to drive at a constant speed for a prolong period of time. So how should I drive it on the highway? Should I vary my speed between 60~90 (there is one straight portion on the highway at 6:00 am that I can go over 90 without getting caught) by using the Semi manual mode shifting myself from 4 to 7 gears while keeping the RPM under 4000 or should I let the car shift itself in D mode in all my driving?

By the way, how do you accelerate super gently or just normal driving? Can I drive at any speed (70~120) for a very short period (one ~ two minutes) as long as I keep the it under 4000 rpm?

Welcome and congrats on the new car. I think you are over-thinking the break in. Just drive like you normally would and try out all the things you mentioned. But at the same time, keeping in mind the break-in instructions in the operators manual. Your alright if you don't follow the manual to the "t". The motor was already run-in at the factory and no doubt the car was already driven around to be tested.

You are fine if you keep your RPM below 5-7k.

On highways, I've done as you say and would occassionally shift to manual mode to drop from 7th to 6th or 5th to move the RPMs around while keeping it under 4K. It doesn't hurt and probably not really necessary, but fun to do anyway.

welcome! Just don't down shift too many gears on highway, don't let the rpm go over 4k during break in

Oops, I already accidentally downshift twice to 4th gear and rev up to a bit over between 4 & 5k. I don't think it will cause any problem.

I think that I am overreacting and baby it too much instead of enjoy my driving. It's one extreme to the other. I use to drive my LGT harder when I first got it.

Anyway, thank you all for your comments and input.

250 miles is plenty of breaking in. I've always purchased cars out of the area and driven them home on the highways never had any problems. Let her rip and don't forget to check your oil levels occasionally especially now.

i did 500 miles manually shifting and keeping the rpm's under 4k. for the highway i just slowly increased and decreased my speed to keep the rpm's moving slightly.
