Service Engine Soon light...

The "Service Engine Soon" light appeared about 3 weeks ago... I remember reading some posts before that it was just a precaution to getting a service at a later time, so I didn't worry too much about it

Well, now I am getting a bit nervous and wanted to ask you guys if the light means trouble or is the car fine?

Service engine soon light is usually thrown when an emission control system part fails (O2 sensor, catalytic converter, gas cap ...) ; take it to the dealer, they will be able to read the code and tell you what's wrong.

Do you have the Nav package.. if so you can try these steps below to get the code.. I got these steps from maxima.org
Follow these steps to enter [at your own risk] into the diagnostic mode:

- Start Engine [required if you want to see all available diagnostic options]
- Turn OFF the Audio system
- While pushing the SETTING button, rotate the radio's VOLUME control either clockwise or counter-clockwise 30+ clicks.
- You will then be put into the diagnostic mode.
- Use the BACK button to get to previous screens.
NOTE:
Holding down the SETTING button and rotating the volume **** a 2nd time will put the diagnostic mode into a more "detailed" state offering more options.

If you try this.. let us know if it works.. also let us know the code..
There are tons of sites that list the meaning of the codes.

I got into the diagnostic mode, but everything was green and working fine; no code was given or found.

Anything else I can do before bringing the car to the dealership?

Maybe I should try resetting the service engine soon light?

Yes you should reset the SES light, it will not come on because of any service warnings. Pay attention to how far you have driven (reset your trip B) before the light comes back on. The faster it comes back, the likelihood of a more serious problem. Mine came on a few months back and I went a good 3-4 months before having it fixed turned out to be a faulty sensor in the exhaust, nothing to be too concerned with.

solid SES light -- nothing too concerning --

blinking SES light -- drive slow or get car towed to stealership asap

I had a SES light come on with our '08 G35x week 2 .. turned out it was a "low voltage" code... apparently when the cars sit on the lot and don't get charged there could be a blip in the voltage due to poorly charged batteries... just one example -- another time it was the gas cap -- several cycles of turning the car on and off should have already reset the SES if it was indeed the gas cap.

I'm confused as to where you go to find the diagnostics for the check engine light. I got into the diagnostics and detailed diagnostics modes but didn't see anything in there to check for codes. All I could find was stuff about the display, speakers, Bluetooth, etc. Where do I go in there to find the codes I'm looking for? Please elaborate.
