3,750 for severe conditions. 7,500 is fine for normal conditions.

You can't tell when to change the oil by looking at the color.

You DO know that the reason BMW recommends 15K miles is because they do free maintenance for the first few years now, right? It's certainly not because their engines are so much tougher or their oil so much more effective. The fewer oil changes for free, the better. You are right that if you are not going to be keeping the car for much over 100K miles, you probably won't have a problem. That's what BMW is banking on by cheaping out on their "free" maintenance. The problem is that once the "free" period is over, the damage may be done, which means lots of engine repair bills that YOU will be footing. Brilliant strategy on their part.

I will say that I actually think the old 3000 mile standby is overkill. about 5K for normal driving is fine. But if you want warranty work done, you better follow their recommendations, and that means 3750.

If there was any evidence that it would do any good I'd be all for it. But there's lots of evidence that it's useless.
How often do you think a cab should change their oil? Seems like 6k is fine. Under normal driving conditions you could easily go 10k - 15k so 7.5k is already conservative.

If you do any stop/go driving, which is just about everyone in a city, it's 3750 miles between oil changes.
It's not "any" stop/go driving, it's "primarily" stop/go driving. Which would likely include everyone living in a city but not the rest of us in suburbia.
Then again, I stop every time I go so maybe, maybe I should be on schedule 1.lol

That TSB is funny in the fact that EVERY dealer I ever worked at all use generic bulk oil brought in by big trucks.....pumps right out of the wall into a can, into your engine.

So, do not assume that your dealer is using that TSB oil unless you ask for it, and even then I would question it.

As for me, Mobil 1, 0W-40 FTW!!!

i change my oil frequently not for the life of the engine, but for the performance boost i get from a engine that feels more lively and smooth.

I had the K&N performance gold, and the dealership said that that can void the warranty!! what a bunch of dimwitts working at these dealerships

wiseguys also overfilled the oil! that too before an oil consumption test.

Not according to an oil company engineer friend of mine. I asked him if I could use 5W-40 synthetic in the G37. I live in Phoenix and wondered about a 30 weight in our summers. His short answer was "no". His long answer was that the internal clearances are sized for nothing greater than a 5W when cold and starting up and nothing greater than 30 when warmed up and hot.

Bottom line, for current modern engines, nothing higher than the recommended "cold" and "hot" recommendations. Lower, especially for the "cold" recommendation in strong winter climates, is okay. But, never higher.

P.S. I know a lot will post "I use 20-60 and haven't had a problem, so use what I use." I am only passing on what oil company engineers are saying for current engines.

goto advance auto parts.
buy 6 quarts of 5w-30 mobile one, ramps, an oil filter fram or whatever, i like fram cause of the grip, filter wrench, oil drain pan, funnel, 10mm socket, and i think 14mm wrench.

drive up on ramps, there is 4 bolts on the rear of the plastic panel, take those out with your 10mm socket, open your drain plug, drain, remove filter and replace. fill 5 quarts in and a splash from the 6th bottle.

Got back from the dealership yesterday on the 2000 mile oil consumption test. My G is about 1 quart low and they said it was normal.

The Manual says that engine will consume some oil between intervals, and the dealership said that it's normal to consume upto about 1.75 quarts between changes. Before they were saying that it should NOT be consuming oil!

Even Nissan seem to have been unclear on what oil to use and the switch to Ester blended oil is to address the evaporation issue aswell, since unlike German cars the G only has 5 quarts for a 3.7 liter HR engine!

Actually, the G37 has a total 6 quarts.

5-1/8 Drain and refill with oil filter change
4-7/8 Drain and refill without oil filter change
6 Dry engine (Overhaul)

the reason why BMW and Mercedes recommends oil change at 10k+ miles is because they use 8-9 quarts of oil. But if I was an owner of BMW or Merc. I would get my oil changed at 5k. recommended oil change intervals are all wrong. It all depends on how the car is driven. Just check your oil everytime you fill up the gas tank.

And to the OP. You should of done your first oil change at around 1500 miles.
It is critcal for a new engine to break in properly.

I know for a fact that BMW dealership must use Castro brands of oil when ever they are servicing car and Mercedes dealer must use Mobile1. I know because I get great prices buying them from the dealer through a whole sale account.

Yeah, they're too conservative. The only way to know for sure is doing an oil analysis but cars can usually go 10k - 15k between changes.
