Lower temperature thermostat

I know alot of us live in hot climates and was wondering if anyone had any input on going one step down in thermostat temp. I used to own a 2004 mazda 6 with the v6 engine. Whenever it would get hot out you could feel the engine wimping out. What people found is that the ecu was pulling the timing and in turn obviously effecting performance. If you went down just one level in thermostat from 195 to 185, or 180 - I can't remember, The car performed much better all the way around. If you went too low on the thermostat the ecu would have issues of course. There can be other advantages to lowering the temp on the thermostat such as cooler head temperature and with that cooler air getting into the motor. Another thing that didn't have quite as drastic effect was doing a coolant bypass on the throttle bodies. I've yet to really take a look at our intake system and know VVEL has alot to do with the air getting into the engine, but if we do have coolant going to anywhere like that, I'm pretty sure there would be no ill effects of bypassing the coolant from those areas in locations where you don't have to worry about things freezing.
